Prom Hair Dos & Don'ts

Your Prom is one of the top ten life events that will follow you for years to come. Not only will you have the memories but you will have Mom and Dad's photos to contend with. Only another major event like graduation, a wedding or your cover on Forbes will erase the Prom pics that will seem to last forever.

Now that I have applied just a little pressure we should talk about your hair. A gorgeous dress, shoes and accessories cry out for a great do.

Here are some tips to create and survive Prom hair.

1. Accentuate the positive. Play up your natural hair texture and design a dressy Prom do around it. For example, if you have gorgeous curls, enhance their beauty and crank them up to the max. Why spend hours in straightening agony when others would kill for your spirals? The same is true for wavy and straight textures.

2. Avoid last minute chemical processing. Perms and straightening solutions often have an intense aroma that will linger on your hair. If you absolutely must have chemical help straightening or curling your strands, have it done several days in advance of Prom night.

3. Remember to think "simple but elegant" when you select your Prom style. Styles that are overdone will detract from your total look and you may morph into "that hair". Choose styles that are pretty and easy to create.

4. When possible, and your budget allows it, consult a professional hairstylist to help you get the look you desire. If you decide to do your hair at home, be sure to have some help and dedicate some time to practice your style before your prom night.

5. Avoid using too many styling products. They can actually be counterproductive, speeding up your hair's demise by the end of the evening.

6. Get a good night's sleep. Your skin and hair will reflect the results.

7. Relax and destress. Don't sweat the small stuff. This is supposed to be a fun and memorable evening. Don't worry about little things. If you have planned for your Prom, everything will fall into place.

8. Have Fun. Once the big night arrives just kick back and enjoy yourself. After all, the whole purpose of the Prom is to have fun and share memories with your friends and family.

The Prom is a key event that many people cherish and remember for many years to come. It doesn't have to be a major stress inducing time that steals away some of the joy that a Prom can bring. Remember that the most important factor for Prom success is that you have fun.
