Willow Smith continues to be a hair trend setter.  She was spotted with her latest hair innovation, waist-length DayGlo braids interwoven with blinding hues of  lime green, yellow and orange add-on hair.

Her new hairstyle will offer maximum hair whipping props.

Even though she’s just ten years old, Willow not only whips her hair when she sings, she keeps her fans and the media guessing with her ever changing hairstyles.

Willow was spotted in Manchester, England yesterday.  The youngest daughter of superstar couple Will and Jada Pinkett Smith is on tour with Justin Bieber.  Willow is the opening act on the Never Say Never tour.

Saturday, March 5th, 2011

Day 2 of Paris Fall/Winter 2011 Fashion Week certainly did not disappoint on Friday, March 5th.

Redken Creative Consultant Guido continued his high fashion looks at Pedro Lourenco and Lanvin with two variations on a classic : the ponytail.

Low Ponytail At Nape of Neck At Pedro Lourenco

At Pedro Lourenco, the look was a low ponytail at the nape of the neck.

“Pedro Lourenco is a young Brazilian designer and we collaborated on a very simple, style for this show to allow the clothes to really make the statement on the runway.” – Guido, Redken Creative Consultant

Redken Products:
Nature’s Rescue Radiant Sea Spray

How To Create the look:

– On dry hair, spray Nature’s Rescue Radiant Sea Spray all over hair to create light texture
– Create a center part with your finger and pull hair back into a low ponytail at the nape of the neck and secure with an elastic
– Be sure to have a few pieces covering the ears
– Wrap a piece of hair around the elastic and secure with a pin

Ponytail Version With Braid At Lanvin

A ponytail yet again was the style at Lanvin – this time it included a braid.

“We wanted to create a very natural look for the collection this season. Sometimes keeping the hair simple and natural makes more of a statement on the runway.” –Guido, Redken Creative Consultant

Redken Product:
wool shake 08 gel-slush texturizer

How To Create the look:
– Apply wool shake 08 gel-slush texturizer to dry hair for texture

Haircut Controversy Continues In Virginia Prison System

Saturday, March 5th, 2011

As reported by The Huffington Post, several Rastafarians and other prison inmates have been moved to a high-security prison as official push the prisoners to cut their hair.  The standoff between the prisoners and prison officials boils down to issues of religious belief versus state’s grooming policies for prisoners.

This is not a new issue.  In fact, many inmates have reportedly spent more than a decade in isolation for refusing to cut their hair.  The prison puts those refusing haircuts into a program to persuade them to cut their hair.  Virginia corrections department spokesman Larry Traylor told the media that nine of the prisoners chose to go back to segregation rather than cut their hair.

(Image of Rastafarian with dreaded hair – Wikipedia – Photo by Jonathan Stephens – Found on – All Rights Reserved)

While corrections officials said the the program to encourage compliance with prison haircut rules offers inmates more privileges and a change to socialize, the prisoners not wanting to cut their hair aren’t buying it.  In letters to the AP, the inmates criticized the program and said it was just segregation by another name.

The prison program encouraging compliance with prison haircut requirements gives graduated privileges to inmates such as time outside cells, money to spend in the commissary and freedom during recreation time if the inmates take classes on anger management and behavioral modification.    Inmates who finish the program “graduate” to the general population, where there are even more privileges. Ellin LaVar Is Still The Queen Of Weaves, Extensions, Braids And Naturally Textured Hair

Monday, January 24th, 2011

Although I somehow fell through the Oprah cracks as one of her ultimate viewers, I have actually been watching the show since the beginning.  I will admit that many of the shows I focused on were related to hair and beauty topics because afterall, that’s been my focus for a long time.

(Image courtesy of Ellin LaVar – All Rights Reserved)

Recently I found a huge three ring binder stuffed to the brim with clippings and notes I had squirreled away over the past 25 years with all kinds of hair and beauty tips, notes and obscure goodies.  One one of the pages I found a note to myself about New York’s fabulous weave and hair extension expert, Ellin La Var, who has appeared on Oprah.

I popped over to Ellin’s website and sure enough, she has a video clip from one of her visits on Oprah where they discussed the fact Ellin had coiffed Oprah’s hair with a weave.   Yes, we all know that Oprah has Andre Walker as her long time show hairdresser but she obviously worked with Ellin at various points in her career and admitted to wearing weaves.

Is Oprah’s Hair A Weave Or Not A Weave?

When Oprah first joined Twitter she tweeted that her hair was not a weave.  At least at that point it wasn’t and for her trip to Australia she was spotted wearing her hair in a series of perky little ponytails.  Again, definitely not a weave. (more…)

Ten Ways To Have Chic Hairstyles On The Cheap

Saturday, January 22nd, 2011

When money is tight the aesthetically inspired never give up on having chic hairstyles.  Even regular visits to the hairstylist are no longer on the budget there are still many options to have stunning tresses.

It was during World War II when women couldn’t afford professional salon visits that home perms, relaxers and hair color kits exploded.  During that time women also drew seams on their bare legs with black eyebrow pencils to simulate seamed stockings and figured out all types of treatments to look glam with little or no cost.

A Chic Hairstyle On The Cheap

Economic doom and gloom is the mother of hairstyle and beauty invention. Listed below are ten ways to have a chic hairstyle on the cheap:

1.  Shop at flea markets or similar locations for vintage silk scarves.  Wear them as glam hair accessories.  A beautiful scarf wrapped around the hairline or a few inches back and tied in a beautiful bow on one side can make any hairstyle look gorgeous and updated.  Or roll your scarf to form a faux headband.
2.  Combine big sparkly earrings with a sleek pulled back pony, twist or bun.  Earrings instantly draw attention to your tresses giving them an amped up look.  Even if your hair is short, stunning earrings will make any hairstyle look fabulous.
3.  Invest in a hand crafted beret, fedora or similar.  Not only are you supporting the local community and stimulating the economy, you’ll showcase your hairstyle in a new light with your edgy head wear. (more…)

Cote de Pablo Rides Gorgeous Hair Waves

Monday, January 10th, 2011

Actress Cote de Pablo has played the gorgeous Ziva David on the popular NCIS on CBS since 2005.

Her luscious chocolate brown tresses with a gorgeous array of highlights and lowlights have undergone a significant transformation since she first appeared as a Israeli Mossad agent.

Initially her naturally textured strands was worn pulled tightly back from her stunning face in a very buttoned down hairstyle.

Over the years as Ziva slowly ingratiated herself into all the members of the team her demeanor and hairstyles became more relaxed.

Instead of tightly structured strands pulled into tight ponytails or twists, Ziva started wearing her long strands cascading down around her shoulders and back.  Her make-up softened and her natural beauty was showcased.

Although Agent David continued to pull her hair back for some field assignments, she started to wear soft braids, looser ponytails and her hair pulled into half up and half down strands.

Offscreen actress Cote de Pablo appears softer and more petite.  She is also incredibly blessed with a stunning head of voluminous strands which are a combination of natural curls and waves.

Her full bouncy hair is the perfect accessory for a crisp white dress or a long glamourous gown.

When Cote straightens her strands she either wears them in a half up/half down style which showcases her widow’s peak at her forehead.  She also looks equally stunning in a tousled nape level wrapped chignon twist.

Actually with that face, hair and body can you imagine the NCIS agent every looking anything but stunning?

Christina Aguilera’s Burlesque Braid

Friday, December 17th, 2010

Singer and newly minted actress Christina Aguilera is on tour through Europe to promote her first role in Burlesque. As reported by Us Weekly Magazine, Ms. Aguilera went native in Berlin, Germany with a Heidi style braided look incorporating edgy add-on pink strands.

It’s no surprise Christina’s braid had pink highlights since in the past she has been a fan of multi-colored accent hair which actually gives her skin a nice healthy glow.

(Image from Us Weekly – All Rights Reserved)

Although I haven’t chatted with the hairstylist who created Christina’s braided style, it looks like a long add-on pony or section of hair was clipped and merged with her own hair in back.  It appears the add-on hair was plaited into a traditional three strand braid or rope which was interwoven with a variety of pink and blonde hued strands before being looped up and over the top of the Burlesque star’s head.

Is the braid created from Christina’s own natural hair?  I would seriously doubt it.  Although the songbird has recently been wearing her tresses below her shoulders,  it appears she’s wearing some type of extensions to amp up her own hair’s length and fullness. Extensions would also save on wear and tear to her own strands since her current color is white-white blonde. (more…)

Sleeping On Natural Curls, Waves Or Textured Tresses

Thursday, December 9th, 2010

If you have naturally curly, wavy, kinky or textured hair you may wish extend that great first cleanse day into several days.

When you want your naturally textured hair to look great on follow-up days there are many tricks you can use to avoid frizz, fuzz or frumpy tresses.

One important key to extending your first day hairstyle is how you sleep on your hair.  Obviously if you’re in bed for 6-8 hours your hair will take the brunt of your sleep cycle.

(Image courtesy of Barbara Lhotan – All Rights Reserved)

This is especially true if you toss and turn in your sleep which can wreck havoc on some textured tresses.

How do you sleep on your hair? Although not all methods work for all types of natural curls, waves, kinks, coils or ringlets, they might work for you.  Be willing to experiment or modify the suggested tips to find what works best for you.

Listed below are some options known to help extend the life of natural textured hair after the first day:

1. Sleep on satin, silk or other hair friendly fabric.
Keep in mind that cotton or other scratchy pillowcases or bed clothes may agitate delicate curls, waves, kinks or other similar textures and actually dry out the hair causing frizz. (more…)

Lindsay Lohan’s Hair Extensions – Differences Between Sewn In And Fusion Hair

Sunday, August 1st, 2010

Lindsay Lohan gets to keep her hair extensions while she’s incarcerated, despite jail rules which specifically say that no inmate is allowed to have add-on hair inside the prison premises.

(Image of Linsay Lohan – DailyCeleb.com – All Rights Reserved)

L.A. County Sheriff’s spokesman Steve Whitmore explained to E!Online that Lindsay is not being given special treatment because her hair extensions are semi-permanent.

The Sheriff said Linday’s extensions “are sewn into her scalp and are bonded by glue so anybody like that – and there are women who come in with those type of hair extensions – we don’t remove them.”

He further said that they only remove those types which are detachable or those kinds that work as wigs.

The problem?  Most semi-permanent hair extensions are either sewn in or bonded with glue, but they are not usually both.  Sew-in hair extensions and fusion extensions both use add-on hair, but the attachment methods are definitely different. (more…)
