I'm a huge fan of Emmy Rossum as Fiona Gallagher in Showtime's Shameless.

Recently I binge watched Season 2 of the show on NetFlix and was reminded of Emmy's Rossum's Headband Braids.  The actress rocked some great braided hairstyles during some of her scenes with ex-love Steve/Jimmy (Justin Chatwin).

Emmy And Fiona's Array Of Braids

Emmy's character looked spectacular in a set of soft Boho style headband braids which she paired with an assortment of hairstyles.

During Season 2 Emmy Rossum's headband braids morphed into a soft over-the-shoulder side braid, a half up/half down braid and a layered braid.

My favorite was Emmy Rossum's headband braids.  Not only did they look sassy and fresh, they totally worked with Emmy's face.

The headband braids also worked for the character of Fiona Gallaher who was relaxing into her relationship with the untrustworthy Steve/Jimmy.

Her relaxed braided hairstyles were symbolic of how Fiona was feeling as she allowed her feelings for bad boy Steve/Jimmy to grow and develop.

Anyone with hair long enough to create two braids extending on either side of a side part can re-create this sexy headband braid.

If you're natural hair isn't long enough, simply attach clip-in {{asin=B00BIP6UWS,text=braids}} on either side of a part. There are many great options available.

Starting With Lots Of Lush Volume

If you prefer to create this hairstyle on hair with lots of volume, before creating the braids, use a 1" or 1 1/2" {{asin=B003KRBLXA,text=curling iron}} to create barrel curls all over your hair.

Use your fingers to reform each curl. Pin {{asin=B0006PS3XU,text=against the scalp}} to allow the curls to form as they cool.  Remove pins, shake out the curls and style before creating the headband braid.

How To - DIY - Emmy Rossum's Headband Braids

Follow the steps below to re-create the headband braids:

1.  Prep - The two matching headband braids work best on second or third day hair.  If you prefer to create it on newly washed hair be sure to prep the sections of hair you wish to braid with light styling cream, pomade or similar to give the braids staying power.  Use a light styling wax if you prefer more separation.

2.  Part -  Use your fingers, a long tail comb or a pick to create a side part.  Make sure you have enough hair to create braids on each side of the part.

3.  Start - Separate two equal sized sections of hair on either side of the part.  Start braiding the first section of hair at the base adjacent to side part.  Braid a traditional 2 or 3 strand braid or do a French braid if you prefer.  Repeat on the opposite side of the part. Make sure the braids are loose for a soft appearance.

4.  Complete - Braid completely creating a headband of hair on either side of the part.   Smooth as you go.  Secure the ends of the braids with clear hair-friendly elastic bands.   Note:  If you prefer, you can also do one complete braid which extends across the entire head from ear to ear.

5.  Secure - Once you have created the braids to your desired specifications, tuck the ends behind your ears and secure against the scalp on either side of the head using two or more bobby pins in a X shaped cross.

6.  Finish - After your headband braids have been secured along the top of your crown on either side of the part, you have many options for the rest of your hair.

Hair Styling Options

You can allow the rest of your hair to cascade loosely around your shoulders.

For a more glam look curl the loose back and side hair with a hot iron to add curls or waves.

Optionally you can pull all of your remaining hair in the back to one side and create a matching side braid.  Or you can  brush the back hair into a pony, twist or low chignon.  The options are endless.

Summary - Emmy Rossum's Headband Braid

Emmy Rossum's headband braid is a clever way to turn hair into its very own accessory. Not only is this an easy DIY braid, it can be dressed up or down depending on the hair event.  It can easily transition from elegant to sassy, sexy and fun.

This is a great hairstyle all year round, but is also a great Spring and Summer style.
