Banishing Bad Hair Days since 1997!™

Shades Of Gray Hair

As Baby Boomers age they are not only accepting the physical changes which mark the passing of the years but embracing it.

While it used to be acceptable for men to love their gray, women were less willing to let their gray, silver, white or pewter show.  However, times are changing and many women are embracing their gray and loving it.

Richard Gere and George Clooney have made gray sexy.  Kathy Bates as Harry on Harry's Law (shown to the side) breaks several barriers with her beautiful head of silver gray tresses as well as her curvy figure which she embraces.

What Causes Gray Hair?

Quite simply the graying of hair is caused by a reduction in the amount of melanin in the hair strands.  Deficiencies of Vitamin C, copper and the vitamin-B complex has been associated with graying, while too much or too little Vitamin A can cause hair to become dull and dry.

Graying which occurs as a result of hereditary genes can't be prevented by nutritional programs.  Adequate protein in the diet however will ensure that your body receives the required amino acids your body needs to manufacture melanin.  Hair follicles require a variety of vitamins and minerals to stay healthy.

On the flip side, studies have shown that sugar and alcohol destroy B-complex vitamins and in some cases (the keyword is some) will accelerate graying of the hair.

Flaunt Your Gray Or Foil It Away?

Whether you prefer to flaunt your gray or cover it there are a myriad of hair products on the market which can help you embrace your choice.  A great colorist can help you either completely cover your gray by integrating highlights, lowlights or a change in your base color.  Or they can help your gray to grow in gracefully.

Ultimately the rules for gray hair have changed but at the end of the day you should always opt for wearing your hair the color, length and style that you love.
