A favorite option for any Party, Prom or related dressy hairstyle dating back to Medieval times is the Half Updo.
This hairstyle is also referred to as the Half Up/Half Down hairstyle.
The Hair Updo is a hairdo which combines tresses worn up throughout the sides and crown and down from the middle of the scalp and down to or past the shoulders.
There is no right or wrong way to create a Half Updo hairstyle.
Even if your hair is short or medium in length you can simulate a Half Up using bobby pins, hair products (gel, paste, hairspray) and you can also add-on hair for the Down part of the hairstyle.
Use your imagination and have fun and you will love the results.
Half Updo Hairstyles
Half Updo hairstyles can be worn with the following options:
1. Without a fringe. 2. With a variety of full or partial fringes in any length, texture or type of hair. 3. With or without a variety of bumps ranging from right at the hairline or at the crown. Bumps can be small, medium or large and they can be positioned in a variety of placements. 4. With or without parts which can range from side, off-center to center parts. 5. Half Updo hairstyles can combine a wide range of textures from stick straight throughout the entire hairdo or a combination of textures from waves and curls.
A popular Half Updo hairstyle combines a tousled fringe and amped up crown area with loose waves or curls cascading down from the back of the crown area like the hairstyle shown above.
There is no hair length which is unacceptable for creating a Half Updo hairstyle. Even if hair is too short, a faux Half Updo can be created or clip-in hair extensions can be utilized.
Of course semi-pro hair extensions can also be added to offer an extended series of Half Updo options. Half Updo hairstyles can be worn with accent braids or a wide range of accent hair accessories. There is no end to how Half Updos can be designed to customize and accent any fashion from casual sleeveless tops to ball gowns.

You can also opt to chat with your favorite hairdresser to get their opinion of the best styles for your hair and the event you are planning on attending.

Re-create Half Up HairStyle
To steal Kylie's short Half Updo hairstyle complete the following steps:
Step 1: Shampoo and condition your hair with your normal products designed for your current hair type, texture and condition.
Step 2: Gently towel blot your hair with a thick towel designed to help absorb moisture.
Avoid rubbing hair vigorously to avoid frizz. Continue to gently blot hair until all excess moisture is removed.
Step 3: Mix a cocktail of leave-in conditioner and frizz buster in the palms of your hands. Apply to damp strands to help keep hair soft and frizz free. Distribute well from a few inches below the roots to the ends.
Frizz Fighters to try: Phytodefrisant - Relaxing Baum - 3.3 fl oz (100ml) and John Frieda - Frizz Ease - Original Formula Hair Serum Dropper
Note: If your hair has natural waves or curls and you wish to have a straight sleek look, mix a cocktail of frizz fighter and straightening balm together.
Step 4: Use a wide toothed comb to detangle gently and make sure the applied styling products are well distributed.
Step 5: Use a flat or paddle brush to lift and anchor two inch sections of hair straight while directing blow dryer air flow down from the roots to the ends. Use the brush to slightly turn the ends under as you blow dry. The results will be a sleek style.
Note: For a more textured look substitute a round brush instead.
Step 6: Work in two inch sections around the entire perimeter of your head until all of your strands are 100% dry.
Step 7: For more definition apply a tiny bit of hair wax to the palms of your hands. Soften the wax and then using fingers, lightly apply to random strands to add definition.
Note: For a softer look that still offers control, try working with hair paste instead of wax. If you prefer, when hair is dry, add some pomade to the tips to create soft spikes.
Step 8: Once hair is 100% dry use your fingers, a brush or a comb to direct front hair and sides of hair towards back of the head. Even if your hair is short you can back comb it to give it fullness and direct it back.
Create the desired hair bump at the hairline or crown and capture the sides and crown hair into a ponytail or other hair base.
If your hair isn't long enough, use bobby pins in the same color as your current hair to anchor and create a faux half pony or base.
If you prefer you can attach a clip-in ponytail or clip-in extensions to create the down section of the Half Updo. Or you can play with your hair to give the illusion of a Half Updo.
Step 8: Apply one or two drops of shine serum to the palms of your hands. Mix well and then lightly brush your hands over the top of your tresses.
Step 9: Spray lightly with a soft hold hairspray.
Choosing a great Half Updo which works for your face shape, natural coloring, lifestyle, age, pocketbook and maintenance starts with some research. You can also opt to chat with your favorite hairdresser to get their opinion of the best styles for your hair and the event you are planning on attending.
