Hair Dye For Grey Hair

Hair Dye For Grey Hair

Hair Dye For Grey Hair

Although more people, men and women, are flaunting their grey hair, the majority of people still desire to cover their grey hair with dye or similar products.  Grey hair is similar in texture and coarseness to silver and white hair colors.  It is famous for being resistant when it’s dyed.

Grey, white and silver hair basically has no pigment.  As a result, grey hair has a very coarse texture which is tough.

Consequently it’s difficult to apply dye to some types of grey hair.  One of the biggest challenges of dying grey hair is getting the color to take and last for an extended amount of time.

There’s a lot of opinions about whether or not the best practice for dying grey hair is to pre-treat it first.

Some professional colorists believe you should pre-treat grey hair to pop open the resistant cuticles and ensure that the dye covers all the target areas most effectively.

As the ratio of grey to natural hair color shifts and becomes the majority, the challenge to dye increases.    (more…)

Transition Into Spring With Great New Hair Color And Styles

Friday, February 4th, 2011

It may not seem like Spring is only five weeks away, especially if you live in the Midwest or East Coast where Winter storms are raging.  As warmer temperatures and sunny skies approach, we’ll all be craving a fresh new hair look.  Maybe even an updated hair color!

Below are some tips from Pam Kelly, the Senior Director/National Technical Education for Fantastic Sams® Hair Salons to help guide you through the process of deciding what hair color and/or styles might be best based on the latest trends in Spring hair color and care.

Find The Right Shade – The first thing you need to do is make sure the color matches your skin tone. Chestnut brown, blonde and copper shades compliment warm undertone complexions. Burgundy, cinnamon, and mahogany work best for those with cooler complexions. Platinum blondes will be very popular this spring and summer but if your complexion doesn’t allow for the white blonde shades, try a shade in beige or light golden tones that will brighten up the face. George Clooney Won’t Ever Marry Again But Will He Dye His Gray Hair Again?

Monday, January 24th, 2011

In a recent Piers Morgan Tonight interview 49 year old George Clooney claimed that he is not looking forward to getting married again.  Never mind that he’s dating the gorgeous Elisabetta Canalis who is a model and actress.

Although they seem like a perfect couple the actor was married to actress Talia Balsam from 1989 to 1993 and says “I hate to blow your whole news story, but I was married, so I gave it a shot.”

Dating One Of Most Sought-After Men Since 2009

Canalis, dating Clooney since 2009, has revealed that at times she feels uncomfortable dating one of the most sought-after men in the world. However, she said that Clooney “reassures me all the time. He is very close. I feel more embraced than ever before. The idea of being so loved is overwhelming….George has given color back to my life.”

And speaking of Elisabetta’s color, if you look at photos of Clooney and Canalis together you might notice how gorgeous their haircolors look together.  Canalis has stunning highlights and lowlights precision blended into her luscious milk chocolate base with light caramel strands around her hairline which plays off her dreamy brown eyes.  (more…)

How To Get Your Natural Hair Color Back – If You Really Want To?

Tuesday, January 11th, 2011

It’s a common wish amongst those hair consumers who’ve dabbled with hair color at home or have gone through a series of hue transitions with the help of a color professional.

How easy is it to take your hair back to it’s God given hue?  It depends on a variety of factors including do you really want to revert to the color you were born with?  If you’ve been coloring your hair for many years, you may actually be disappointed if you go back in color time to the original version of yourself.

Dig Out The Photo Album

Before you hit the hair color aisle at the local drugstore or book a very expensive professional hair color appointment so some soul searching.  Dig out photos of yourself as a baby, small child and teen.  Did you like the way your hair color evolved as your aged?  Or did you change your color because your original hue looked dull, boring or lacking in pizazz?  Good question, right?

Once you’ve researched your hair color from the past talk to your family and friends.  Do they prefer the color you currently have or do they prefer you in a previous shade?  You might be surprised to hear what they have to say. (more…)

Black Walnuts And Other Natural Dyes To Naturally Darken Your Tresses

Wednesday, December 29th, 2010

I’ve tried just about every natural hair treatment imaginable since the late 1980s when I started growing my hair.  I was especially determined to find a natural hair lightener so I could keep my beautiful golden highlights without the damage hair lightening products bring.  I even went so far as to try rhubarb as a natural lightener.

Did it work?  That would be a big no although I managed to completely trash my kitchen with pots and pans as well as chopped up rhubarb.

One of my brunette tressed friends, Eva,  has had much better luck than me.  Her hair is naturally dark brown but it tends to pull a reddish tint throughout the edges.

In the past she has experimented with a range of natural treatments with mixed results.  Yes, she’s worked with a professional hair colorist who combed a slightly darker temporary color through her strands.  I remember that because I rode home in the car with her hair wrapped up in a special color cap and a thin line of dark brunette color streaking down her cheeks.

While the temporary color did a great job, she still continues to experiment with natural darkening treatments which enhance her natural brunette, but covers the slight tinge of red which pops out throughout the ends.   (more…)

How To Avoid Hair Color From Fading

Thursday, December 9th, 2010

There are many factors, which can accelerate the loss of hair hues whether you had it colored at the salon or at home.  The following hair care products, tools and behaviors will definitely speed up color loss and should be avoided whenever possible:

1.  Avoid washing hair within 48 hours after having the hair color applied at the salon or at home.
Studies have shown hair color continues to set up to 48 hours after being applied.  If hair is washed too quickly after it has been colored a percentage of the newly added color may wash right down the drain.

Waiting allows the natural hair oils to help the color to stick longer and stronger. This is especially true if you haves porous hair in which case the color may wash out even quicker.

2.  Minimize use of cuticle opening formulas.
Once you do resume washing your hair avoid shampoo products which are described as volumizing, clarifying, fattening or designed to blow open the cuticle.  When the cuticle is opened, hair color may be more easily lost.

3.  Avoid alcohol when possible.
Avoid using alcohol rich styling products. Alcohol  is known to accelerate hair color loss. Ask your hairdresser to recommend products without alcohol which will not harm the life of the color. (more…)

The Beauty Box Salon In Dallas, Texas

Monday, December 6th, 2010

One of the best perks of my work with HairBoutique.com is the opportunity to meet some of the most stellar people in the hair and beauty world.

A few months ago Christopher Box, or Chris, as he prefers to be known to his friends, reached out to me via email and invited me to visit his chic hair salon, The Porch, in uptown Dallas.

(Image of Christopher Box in front of The Beauty Box Salon in Dallas, Texas -December 2010 – Photo by Jeffry Hines for HairBoutique.com – All Rights Reserved)

After a long and engaging phone chat with Chris, we agreed to meet up for lunch to talk further about the world of hair and beauty.   On a gorgeous November day  Chris and I, along with HairBoutique.com’s Brigid, met at The Porch for an engaging meal.

The Porch is one of my favorite restaurants because of the relaxing atmosphere, always amazing food and great service.  Unfortunately the chic eatery is a bit of a jog down 75 from HairBoutique.com so I don’t get to go as often as I like except for special events like meet ups with new friends like Chris.
