Yesterday I wrote a blog about Erika Christensen's hairstyle evolution during the past five seasons of Parenthood and revealed I spent the weekend binge watching my favorite drama on Netflix.

Some fans of the show might wonder why I didn't focus my hair watching on Monica Potter's textured Parenthood bob haircut. Monica is now famous for her role as Kristina Braverman who fought cancer throughout Season 4 of the show.

I actually did pay close attention to Monica's textured hairstyle, I just decided to start my Parenthood hair series with Erika Christensen.

Complete Hair Loss Due To Chemo

Although her character lost all of her hair due to chemo, the actress declined the show's request that she shave her head.  Instead, she wore a bald cap for the story lines surrounding Kristina's struggles with loss of her gorgeous long blonde hair.

In January of 2013 Monica told Us Magazine  she seriously considered shaving her head ultimately declining due to the pleas of her 7 year old daughter Molly who begged her not to shave her head.

Instead the actress wore a series of wigs and bald caps to portray what Kristina Braverman was experiencing during her cancer fight.

Cutting Her Hair For Kristina Braverman

In the summer of 2013 before Season 5 the actress decided to cut her signature long blonde hair in solidarity with her character's hair regrowth process.  Since Kristina Braverman lost all of her hair to cancer, her recovery journey would involve growing back her hair in stages.

While deciding which was the best hair cut to adopt, Monica Potter took to Twitter to poll fans on the best hairstyle to consider for herself and Kristina.

She posted three photos which included Julianne's Hough's signature blonde bob haircut, Sarah Hardin's shaggy pixie cut and Emma Watson's super short cropped hairstyle.

From that hairstyle feedback request on Twitter evolved Monica Potter's textured parenthood bob haircut.

Monica Potter's Quest To Achieve Realistic Post Cancer Hairstyle

Although I certainly prefer both the actress and Kristina with their previous long below-the-should blonde hairstyle, I admire the actress for her quest to achieve a realistic look for her character.

During my weekend Parenthood binge watching, I did additional research on the show's producers and discovered some interesting facts about the show and why it tries to portray real life human experiences.

Parenthood's Jason Katims Keeps It Real

Parenthood’s producer and writer, Jason Katims, is known for tackling emotional stories.

Why?  Because he has personally lived through many of the story lines showcased on Parenthood.  Not only does Katims have a child with special needs like Max Braverman, his wife fought cancer much like Kristina Braverman did.

You have to respect Katims for being willing and able to draw from his own painful life experiences and share them with viewers of Parenthood.  No wonder the show's plot lines are so deep, emotional and gut wrenching at times.

While the show can definitely trigger some tears, it's not too sappy or unrealistic.  The shows find a good balance between being realistic and entertaining with a great story.

If the actress wanted to show a realistic hair style for Kristina's post-cancer recovery journey, she picked a very good haircut.

Advantages Of Bob Haircuts

A bob haircut can work with just about any face shape, hair texture and type.  It can be modified to accommodate an array of hair challenges.

Bob hairstyles are also great bridge haircuts for someone growing out their hair from short to long after a major hair loss.  Bobs can either be layered or not and can easily work with naturally straight or textured hair.

Of course not all bobs are created equally.  Each person adopting a new bob haircut should consider all the  possible options ranging from adding an array of fringes or parts and lengths.

A bob is an ideal haircut for both Monica and Kristina.  It's a very realistic hairstyle for the cancer recovery storyline of the show.

Not all fans have loved the bob haircut the actress chose for Kristina but it does serve a very important purpose.

I personally love how Kristina is accessorizing her new haircut and style with an array of hair accessories such as skinny headbands and hair clips.

In one episode Kristina is shown realistically wearing her overgrown fringe back off her face.   Who hasn't done that when their fringe has grown into their eyes?

The NBC Gods Of Renewals

In my blog about Erika Christensen's hairstyle evolution I explained I was binge watching Parenthood, although I watched all the original episodes as they aired, because I wanted to dedicate my current blogs to NBC's Parenthood.

The show is my favorite and is still in jeopardy of not receiving a renewal for the 2014/2015 season.

It's my goal to bring attention to anyone who hasn't watched this amazing show, even if it's just through the character's hair journeys.

Also, I'm hoping NBC will recognize how many ardent fans like myself will be very sad if the show ends with the current season.

Here's hoping the NBC Gods of Renewal shower Parenthood with the gift of renewal for another season.

Dedication:  This blog is dedicated to the amazing Carolyn Cooper, who always inspires me to be a better person.
