The team of John Sahag professional hair, color and makeup experts partnered with Multi Media Magazine (MMI) to transform lucky winners of a recent MMI Model Makeover Contest.

The Makeover

The Cut

Master stylist Rafael Garcia started the make over process by first studying Kristin's face shape for inspiration.

Rafael determined that Kristin had an oval face shape, which offers many different hair cut and styling options.

Kristin's natural hair was relatively fine and the texture was straight, not normally conducive to holding curls or waves.

Rafael wanted to open up Kristin's face to showcase her gorgeous facial feature hidden behind a curtain of straight strands lacking any definition. He also wanted to create the illusion of a longer neck.

To accomplish his goals Rafael decided to create a sassy shaggy cut with undefined edges allowing for instant elongation of the neck area and redirected focus on Kristin's face.

Utilizing the famous Sahag dry cut method, Rafael separated Kristin's tresses into section help out of the way with large white clips. He then carefully cut a series of free form shapes into her hair carefully creating a sizzling shorter style with fabulous natural flow and movement.

Rafael maintained Kristin's original fringe but modified it by cutting disconnected layers into the section to balance the rest of the new shaggy style and worked perfectly with her forehead and to open up her eye area.

The finished style was an incredible work of hair art created specifically just for Kristin. Kristin's strands fell perfectly into place. The slightly choppy dimensional cut added instant softness.

The Color

Kristin's pre-makeover hue was a medium brown hue that was too dark and heavy for her eye and skin tones.

John Sahag master colorist Daniel Garza wanted to lighten up Kristin's natural brown he. Daniel decided to make "fire come out from the bottom and the fringe". He wanted the glow of a fiery hue to spice up her skin tone and light up her eyes.

Taking Kristin from her normal brown to Daniel's inspired fiery red required several steps. In fact, the key to Kristin's major transformation can be directly tied to the many hue changes that her tresses experienced.

The first step involved applying a double process color to create a red-orange base. One the base color was created to Daniel's satisfaction, highlights were strategically woven around the perimeter of the shaggy style to lighten and create fiery definition. Thus realizing the goal of crafting a fiery glow from the bottom and the fringe.

The Styling

After Kristin's based and highlights were finished, the various color chemicals were washed out of her tresses.

To protect and maintain the delicate new red and orange hues, John Sahag Clean For Chemically Altered Hair - a color maintenance shampoo - was used on Kristin's hair followed by use of the John Sahag Clean Conditioning rinse for her naturally coarse tresses.

Kristin's hair was towel blotted to remove excess water.

The John Sahag 3D Volumizing Gel, which is miraculously invisible, light and non-sticky was applied very liberally along the roots and then worked into the strands down to the ends to help build in lots of sassy volume and fullness through the interior of the style. The 3D Gel also helped soften Kristin's hair while adding shine and control.

Once the 3D product was distributed completely throughout Kristin's hair Rafael separated her hair into smaller workable sections. Using a round boar's bristle style brush and a blow dryer with a concentrator, Rafael blow dried Kristin's hair, starting at the back of the head while directing the air flow down the shaft from the roots to the ends building in lots of major fullness and movement. He used his fingers to direct the hair along the nape of the neck.

The Finishing Touches

Once Kristin's hair was completely dry Rafael applied a tiny bit of John Sahag Revitalizing Drops to the palms of his hands and distributed the product through Kristin's tresses to add a dab of shine and renew the texture of the newly styled strands.

He used a brush to slightly backcomb the crown area to add extra fullness.

Creating a very slight side part he directed a soft sweep of hair to either side of the part. Rafael also directed a section of hair down and over the top of Kristin's forehead creating a feathery effect.

The finished fringe barely brushed the top of her eyebrows directing focus to Kristin's stunning eyes.

Rafael used a hot iron to spot smooth the fringe. He pulled individual pieces along the nape and sides and finger picked the style until it was a cap of sleek and shimmering strands.

The Make-Up

Makeup artist Flora Kay evaluated Kristin's skin and eye tone along with her face shape and stunning new vibrant hair hue to craft a major makeup design.

The major change in hair color necessitated a change in Kristin's base make-up formulations.

Flora crafted an eyebrow shaping that added definition to Kristin's naturally light brows.

After

The results were stunning. The masterful John Sahag team created a look consisting of fiery orange splashed red panels of color interspersed throughout a multi-length edgy shag that consisted of an array of soft layers.

The sassy face framing style worked in perfect harmony with Kristin's skin and eye tones. Indeed, Kristen's hair color was reminiscent of smoldering red embers swirling playfully along the edges of her stunning new style.

More About John Sahag Workshop

The late John Sahag (2005) was an Internationally known and beloved hair artist for more than 30 years starting his career at the tender age of 16. John was renowned for his "dry cut" which today is used by many hairdressers around the world.

In 1985 John opened The John Sahag Workshop in New York City with the purpose of "creating an oasis away from the frenetic pace of New York life". His goal was to erase the "edginess" of urban living and to revive the energy of every man and woman entering into his Workshop space.

The ultimate goal of The John Sahag Workshop which still exists in the present time is to make sure that every person who leaves the salon is enhanced, refreshed and invigorated. Although the great hairdresser has passed on, his vision and work are still practiced today by those great hairdressers that are still involved with the John Sahag Workshop.

Sahag took pride in his work and all those that worked for him.
