Discovered On The Street

Three years ago Evangeline (Evie to her close friends) was literally discovered by a Ford agent on the streets of Kelowna, BC, but passed up an offer to sign with the renowned agency.

Acting had been a dream of hers since she was a teenager but she abandoned the notion for the more aesthetic dream of working in international relations.

Six months after Lilly first turned down the Ford offer, she moved to Vancouver to attend the University of British Columbia. Once there, she decided to sign with Ford to help pay for tuition.

"I was a broke student whose car broke down every day - who could barely afford to eat - and was trying to make money for tuition and, therefore, was doing the odd commercial here and there," she said.

After appearing in a few commercials, she decided to give up acting and focus on studying. While attending University, the actress founded and ran a world development and human rights committee.

A volunteer for children's projects since age 14, Evangeline traveled to the jungles of the Philippines with a missionary group where she lived in a grass hut.

Her career has spanned a wide range of jobs besides modeling. She has been a flight attendant, worked retail and at a tanning salon and even spent time as a grease monkey.

Hard to believe but Evangeline told Lucky Magazine in the May 2005 issue that she had a job where she "changed oil for 18 wheelers and rental cars".

A couple of years after she finished school while she was trying to find a meaningful career, a friend urged her to give acting another shot and, after a role as Benson's girlfriend in “Kingdom Hospital,” the beauty caught the acting bug.

Beautiful But Goofy

Evangeline first hit the radar in Judgement Day, a television series that aired in 2002.

She was in the film Stealing Sinatra but didn't receive a credit for her part. She also appeared in one episode of Tru Calling and The L Word. She went on to in a small role in Kingdom Hospital which aired in 2004 on the USA Network.

From Kingdom Hospital Evangeline captured the role in J J Abrams' ratings smash hit, "Lost". The TV series follows the lives of a group of ragtag plane crash survivors, stranded on a remote island somewhere in the Pacific Ocean.

Kate has a very mysterious past and grabs viewer attention with her struggles over a love triangle between bad boy Sawyer (Josh Holloway) and good guy Jack (Matthew Fox).

Ironically the alluring actress won her part as the result of an audition tape that she sent in to the Lost producers. Within a matter of weeks the Lost executives summoned her for a live reading at which point she had the part that have completely changed her life.

Industry insiders are predicting that the freckle faced 5'5" beauty will shoot to the top in her role as Kate.

JJ Abrams has a history of turning relatively unknown actresses into major household names. Abrams discovered Keri Russell (Felicity) and Jennifer Garner (Alias). Comparisons are already being made between Kate, Keri and Jennifer.

"She was beautiful, but there was a goofy quality about her," said Lost creator Abrams, in an interview. "It didn't feel like she wasn't a human being."

Tough But Feminine

Life imitates art in this case. Both Kate and Evangeline have a knack for being tough while also being feminine. Like Kate, Evangeline is a "rough and tumble" gal who enjoys keeping up with "the boys". Her Lost cast mates have nicknamed her "monkey" because of how easily she can climb trees.

Jungle Hair

The filming of Lost is actually done on a remote part of an island in Hawaii. Evangeline's lush wavy tresses are constantly subjected to all types of environmental conditions including being in the jungle and on the beach that does a number on her strands.

Her Lost scenes are often shot in high winds, pounding rain and brutal sun which explains the fact that her hair always looks like it was tousled by Nature and whipped around in the mud.

The 25 year old actress has commented in media interviews that all to protect their skin from the brutal elements "we keep applying and reapplying SPF 30 Sunscreen"

Many of her new fans find her to be gorgeous but Evangeline has confessed in past interviews that she is "hypercritical" and a "perfectionist". These traits carry over to her attitudes about her looks.

She told the Honolulu Star that she has a big nose "so I wear my hair a certain way to hide it". She also said that her ears tends to stick out, and thus "wear my hair down".

Ironically, according to Yahoo! Entertainment (Watch With Kristen), Evangeline, who was the last person cast for Lost, was asked to audition with her hair "up" because it was felt that she looked "frumpled" with her hair down. She piled her hair up and the rest is history.

Steal Evangeline's Looks

In her role as Kate for Lost, Evangeline's long bra strap length tresses are coiffed in a windswept style that plays up her natural textures. Her lush locks are a mixture of loose curls and lots of waves. She almost always have a few loose strands cascading into her face to give her an even more appealing "just back from fighting monsters" look.

Depending on the Lost setting, Evangeline might pull her hair back or up in a messy twist to give the impression that she is trying to keep her strands out of her eyes.

For her round of daytime guest appearances she has appeared in a number of styles ranging from au natural to stick straight and twisted up.

Step By Step Tips

Both the actress and her character Kate are subjected to brutal environmental conditions which can tend to dry out delicate strands. To create Evangeline's natural wavy/curly tousle, complete the following steps:

Step 1: Shampoo hair with a moisturizing product that is ideal for your hair's texture, type and current condition. Follow with an appropriate rinse-out conditioner.

Note: Although Evangeline's hair is not highlighted, it does take a beating from constant exposure to sun, surf, sand, wind and rain. A moisture enhancing treatment formula would be a good first step to caring for super dry locks.

(Shampoo products to try: Phyto - Phytojoba Hydrating Shampoo - 6.7 fl oz (200ml), PHYTO - Dry Hair System, Phyto - PhytoBrush Shampoo - 6.7 fl oz (200ml)

Step 2: Rinse well with a cool water rinse which helps build natural volume and increase shine.

Step 3: Towel blow strands. Detangle strands from the ends to the roots.

Step 4: Apply a curl or wave-enhancing cream, mousse or similar products through damp hair. Distribute well.

(Wave & curl enhancing products to try: Citre Shine - Making Waves - Curl Booster, John Frieda - Frizz Ease - Corrective Styling Mousse - Curl Reviver w/ Sunscreen, John Frieda - Frizz Ease - Dream Curls - Curl Perfecter, John Frieda - Frizz Ease - Corrective Styling Gel - Style Curly/Straight, John Frieda - Sheer Blonde - Curls & Swirls, got2b - Curled-Up Curling Spray, Citre Shine - Curl Crunch Curling Creme).

Note: If your hair tends to frizz or is naturally wavy or curly, you may wish to also add a smoothing serum to the mix. (Anti-Frizz Product to try: Rene Furterer - Control Emulsion Anti-Frizz)

Step 5: Working from side to side use a blow dryer with a long finger diffuser and your hands to scrunch dry from ends to roots.

Step 6: To build in lots of waves and curls direct the air flow from the diffuser up the hair shaft to the root. This "ruffles the cuticle" helping to add natural fullness.

Step 7: Seal the style by finishing up with a blast of cool air, if possible, from the blow dryer.

Step 8: When hair is completely dry, define waves and/or curls with a 2" barrel curling iron or set on large hot rollers.

Step 9: Let hair completely cool then use fingers to gently tousle.

Step 10: Apply a tiny drop of shine serum, drops or spray into the balms of your hands. Lightly brush the palms over the top of your style and you are ready to rock ala Heather Locklear style.

(Shine products to try: Phyto - PhytoLisse (Formerly Phytodefrisant RelaxSerum)

Step 11: Finish with a spritz of hairspray. For touchable waves and curls that move and bounce, choose a soft or flextible hold formulation that provides subtle support without the stiffness.

(Hairsprays to try: PhytoPro - Instant Hold Spray #15 - 6.7 fl oz, Rene Furterer - Instant Hold Finishing Spray

Summary

The beautiful brunette Lost actress was not only discovered ala Old Hollywood Lana Turner style, she was cast in a very important role by J J Adams who instantly spotted that extra special something that made Jennifer Garner a huge star.

There is little doubt the gorgeous Canadian has fame and fortune in her future.
