Dandruff Shampoo May Save The Day For Hair Color Goofs

Many years ago my hair colorist at the time warned me to avoid cleansing my hair with either volume enhancing shampoos because they are designed to blow open hair follicles.

While that's a great thing for adding fullness for your hair it can speed up hair color loss.   Although volume enhancing formulas may accelerate hair color loss, so will the use of  hot water, clarifying shampoos and cleansing products infused with deep conditioning treatment designed to combat dandruff.

Recently a HairBoutique.com emailed me  in a panic because she'd decided to add a darker hue to her chocolate brown base color.  She was horrified to discover her desired deep chocolate was actual closer to grape jelly when she unwrapped her towel.  Since her color disaster had just happened I suggested she get back into a hot shower, suds up with dandruff shampoo, rinse and repeat.

It can take up to 24 hours for hair color to completely set.  If you achieve undesirable home color results the key is to immediately address the issue by using a product like dandruff, volumizing or clarifying shampoo which releases the newly added color molecules from your tresses before they take hold.

Remember to always apply a deep conditioning treatment after using dandruff, volumizing or clarifying products because they can be very drying to colored hair.

Daily Hair Tip
To protect against potential heat damage to your hair, always use a blow drier on the coolest setting and make sure to apply a good leave in conditioner that will protect the hair shaft from the dryer.
