(AMERICAN IDOL: TOP 9: Clockwise from left: Tim Urban, Crystal Bowersox, Andrew Garcia, Casey James, Siobhan Magnus, Michael Lynche, Aaron Kelly, Katie Stevens and Lee DeWyze. CR: Michael Becker / FOX - All Rights Reserved)
Ellen who is the newest judge on American Idol asked Ryan if he evaluated the AI contestants for how they would sound on the radio. Ellen said you're probably looking at the contestants from the viewpoint of "who would I play on the radio? Are you doing that? Do you?"
Ryan said "I do. I do think that. As you know, when we listen to the contestants on the set and when you hear them through the television there's a different sound. It's tough to hear. With the audience it tough to hear exactly how they sound. So when I listen back I can hear what's a good radio voice. There are several contestants that do have one. I do think Lee (DeWyze) and Crystal (Bowersox) has a good radio voice."
Good On Radio Versus Good As A Performer
Ellen said "it's different with a radio voice versus someone who's a performer. Because there's a lot of good performers. There's a lot of good people who are on stage." Ellen help up a list of the remaining AI contestants who had X's marked over their faces. She said "no disrespect, they're just not there anymore. It's a tough business" to the Xs on the marked out contestants.
Ryan pointed at Siobhan Magnus and said "she's great". Ellen agreed. They also discussed Tim Urban and Ellen said "he rarely blinks" she continued "he's just a happy, happy guy."
Ryan's Favorite American Idol Contestant
Ellen asked Ryan if he has a favorite from Season 9 and Ryan said "I do, but I hate to say it while we're actively on the air. Because I stand next to them. They'll turn on me." Ellen "I know. I'm not asking you to say it." Ryan said "but I'm looking at one now who's my favorite."
Ellen said "which one are you looking at?" Ryan "the same one you are."
Neither said who their current American Idol favorites are. Will we ever know for sure? Maybe but then maybe not.
