Big hair is often a misquoted, misused and misunderstood phrase. Even worse it is sometime referred to as Dallas Hair, Texas Hair, Prom Queen hair or even AquaNet hair which is tied to the days of big helmet head of hair held in place by literally entire cans of hairspray.
The modern 2000s to 2009 version of big hair has little connection to entire cans of spray, Dallas, Texas or even the 80s.
Think lush but sleek fullness and voluptuous volume minus pouffed up fringes, over teased crowns, amped up curls or ratty bed-head disasters that flashed temporarily through the 90s.
A great example of this current big hair look is actress Annabella Sciorra who co-stars on Fox TV's Mental series. She is a perfect example of big hair that is glorious.

Big hair for 2009 is tied intricately to the S words - shiny, soft, silky, sensuous, sexy - and definitely not sticky or stiff. The Big Hair of 2009 works for all hair types, textures and shapes and is tied to texture, volume, movement, fullness.

Voluptuous volume translates to textured ringlets, loose waves and sleek straight hair with attitude and oomph.
Does that mean an end to back combing? Not necessary, but it does mean an elimination to mile high hair that isn't seamlessly incorporated into the overall style.
What's driving this current hair movement? The economy has some play in the attitude which revolves around spending less but getting more for your hair product investments.
It's also tied into the change in fashions which are transitioning into a softer more feminine trend full of ruffles, pleats, draping and vibrant colors.
Hair should be the ultimate frame to your overall look not the big style focal point that detracts from the entire look.

When it comes to a gorgeous hairstyle it should enhance not detract from all the other parts of the picture. Which explains the move to sleek, soft, shiny and natural big hairstyles for 2009 and beyond.
