The Warner Brothers announcement was picked up by major media and covered on all the Entertainment Channels including E!. The critically acclaimed film about the famous Caped Crusader has moved into fourth place on the list of all-time box office grosses.
The Dark Knight currently ranks fourth after Titanic (1.84 billion), The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King (1.12 billion) and Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest ($1.07). Depending on a variety of factors the film may continue to accrue additional revenues which could take it higher on the list.
The Dark Knight is nominated for 8 Academy Awards including one for the now deceased Heath Ledger who played the Joker. He is nominated for Best Supporting Actor although history has shown that Oscar awards are not normally awarded posthumously.
It is unclear if Heath's former finance and the mother of his child Mathilda will attend the Oscars on his behalf. It has been announced that Heath's father will attend and accept the award if he wins.
