Do It Yourself All Natural Hair Mousse

Question

Dear Karen,

I really love hair mousse, but I can't ever seem to find a off-the-shelf formula both my hair and I really love.

It would great if I could make my own mousse.

Do you have a good Do-It-Yourself (DIY) recipes I could try?

Thanks in advance.  Wanda

Answer

Dear Wanda,

I wish I had more time to experiment with DIY hair recipes because they're fun to try.

Digging through my notes from my Aunt Margie, who was a hairdresser for many years extending back to the 1950s, I found an all natural hair mousses.

The cool thing about the recipe is that's is 100% non-toxic and completely edible.

It's also a great product for fine/thin hair and hair which is naturally wavy, curly, coily and/or kinky because it's so light and won't weight hair down.

Hair mousse helps keep frizz under control.  It helps give the appearance of more defined curls.

If you have any DIY Mousse left over you can eat it.  Or if you like, you can like the bowl.

It works great as a hair setting mousse as well.

I found the following DIY Hair Mousse Recipe she used to make for use on her hair clients.

Ingredients

2 egg whites (organic if you prefer)

1/2 cup coconut oil (organic if available)

2 capsules vitamin E

Optional - 1 teaspoon of real edible vanilla extract or oil (if you want to lick the bowl) or 1 teaspoon of lavender and/or rose fragrance if you don't want to eat the mixture.

Instructions

Beat the egg whites until they form stiff peaks.

Gently fold in other ingredients with or without the vanilla and/or lavender and/or rose fragrance with a spatula.

Let the recipe set for 1/2 to 1 hour in a cool (not the refrigerator) location.  Then apply a tennis ball sized amount to damp hair.

Many people use mousse as a type of setting lotion as well as a way to sculpt sections of the hair.   If you buy the over-the-counter version of mousse, you'll get a foamy hair product usually found in an aerosol can.

Unfortunately many versions of mousse contain alcohol and other ingredients which may be drying to hair.

If you want an all natural DIY hair mousse, try my Aunt Margie's recipe and see how you like it.
