Patricia Field: Steal Her Hairstyle

Introduction

Patricia Field

Patricia Field is best-known for her spectacularly eclectic costume designs for the cult classic - Sex and The City (SATC). The flamboyant redhead whose tresses sometimes contain hints of deep fuchsia, is considered to be one of the most influential stylists and costume designs alive today.

Although Patricia was responsible for all of the SATC girls, her ultra-sexy and outrageous style was most often showcased by Sarah Jessica Parker who played Carrie.

The hallmarks of Patricia's work with Sarah Jessica was her deliberately mismatched styles which were built on an odd combination of masculine and feminine items which actually worked well together. Patricia's brilliant clothing inspirations triggered many new fashion trends and helped to take previously untouchable couture level labels such as Manolo Blahnik to household name status.

Ultimately Patricia Field changed the way women dress. She has commented that it was never her intention to create a cultural fashion revolution. She just wanted to have fun and mix things up a bit.

It was recently announced in the media that Patricia is currently collaborating with that respectable British retail institution - Marks & Sparks. She is designing a fabulous collection of clothes for M&S christened Destination Style New York.

Her Destination collection ranges from clingy mini-dresses to sparkly stunning jumpsuits just for M&S. Patricia Field has hit another one out of the park.

After the Sex and The City TV show ended, Patricia moved on to sprinkle her fairy dust designing on other lucky shows including Ugly Betty and the new Kath and Kim.

Patricia Field was born in New York City some sixty six years ago to Greek and Armenian Parents. She was nominated for an Oscar for her costume design on the popular film, The Devil Wears Prada. Patricia was the designer responsible for turning Anne Hathaway's dowdy character in an over-the-top fashionista.

On work as the costume designer on Ugly Betty required her to make ugly look appealing. Even though the main character - Betty Suarez - is dumpy and frumpy, Patricia has turned her into a character the viewers find totally appealing and endearing.

Patricia maintains a retail boutique in New York in the Bowery area. She actually started in the boutique business back in 1966 when she opened her first namesake boutique in Greenwich Village. The current store is filled with all sorts of amazing items ranging from Spandex dresses to handcuffs. She is incredibly versatile.

Steal Patricia's Hairstyle

Besides being known for brilliance at pushing the fashion envelope, she is recognized for her over-the-top tomato-fuschia hair which she wears long and generally wavy.

In a recent interview with the British press regarding her M&S line, Patricia talked about her desire to always select fashions and accessories for herself which work with her vibrant hair color.

She also referenced the importance of her car working with her overall color theme which resulted in her car being "a sort of awkward turquoise". She noted that turquoise glasses goes great with her hair and she wants her hair to look cool in her car, so the result was turquoise.

Step By Step Instructions

Patricia Field

Follow the steps listed below to steal Patricia's loose barely-there waves:

1. Cleanse hair with a product designed to address your hair's special curl needs.

Depending on the texture of your hair you may wish to either cleanse with a diluted shampoo formulation (1 part shampoo to 3 or 4 parts water) or wash with conditioner only (CO). Choose the best historical cleansing steps for your hair's natural texture.

If you color, highlight or chemically treat your strands as Patricia does, select a shampoo that supports those treatments as well as your natural texture.

Note: One to try - Ken Paves gentle moisturizing Healthy Hair Daily Shampoo

2. Apply the appropriate rinse-out conditioners. (Avoid if hair is super thin, fine or tends to flatten easily). Rinse out or deep conditioners are excellent steps to take for strands which may be damaged.

Note: One to try - Ken Paves Healthy Hair DailyConditioner.

If you wish to amp up your hair color like Patricia's use 1-2 pumps of Ken Paves Boost Up color with your daily conditioning rinse. Select from a variety of colors from Black or Brown to Platinum depending on your current hair hue.

3. Finish with a cool/cold water rinse to close cuticles and encourage natural shine.

4. Towel blot and apply very light cocktail of desired leave-in detangler, conditioner or other styling products (firm holding mousse or gel). Ken Paves Boost Up color can also be added to your leave-in or other styling products for extra color oomp.

If hair frizzes easily, apply a defrisant balm like Phytodefrisant or similar to damp strands to prevent frizz while still allowing barely-there waves to form.

5. For extra control around the face, crown and sides, apply a firm holding hair cream or sculpting gel.

Note: One to try: Ken Paves Healthy Hair Curl Balm.

6. Separate hair into individual 2" sections. Working from side to side around the entire head blow dry hair with blow dryer with long finger diffuser.

Avoid touching your strands with your fingers as you work to avoid frizz. When possible, use the slowest, coolest setting. Allow strands to rest in the base of the diffuser cup as you direct air flow through the strands.

7. Once each section of hair is 100% dry, clip or pin the section into a twisted ringlet pattern against your scalp and continue drying the next section.

8. When hair is completely dry and pinned against the scalp, spray entire the entire head with a firm holding spray like PhytoPro Strong Finishing Spray or Ken Paves Healthy Hair Shaping Finishing Spray. Allow spray to dry completely before removing pins or clips.

9. Right before leaving the house unpin all the hair sections and use fingers to tousle the newly formed barely-there waves. If desired, use a small or medium barrel curling iron to touch up any disconnected curl sections.

Note: For more defined waves set hair in hot rollers.

10. Finish with a swipe of Ken Paves Healthy Hair Shine Serum. Apply one drop of the Shine Serum to the palms of your hands, rub together and then lightly brush over the top of your gorgeous new soft waves.

Top off your barely-there waves with a crystal encrusted headband, or attach an accent flower or crystal clip.
