No Skin Off My Nose: Skin Softening Products

Introduction

Life is always stranger than fiction. At least in my life it is. Ironically while I was writing my recent article What To Do When Your Hair Gets A Cold, I caught a real humdinger of a cold the minute I finished writing the article. All the folks at HairBoutique.com were kidding me that I had given my body to the cause by attracting a cold.

After sucking down lots of Boiron's ColdCalm, hard core Vitamin B and C tablets and cranking up my hair vitamins, I did manage to accelerate my cold to just three days instead of my normal seven. During the last 12 hours of the cold I got to the Rudolph the Raw Nose stage from constant blowing. Yes, I indulged in the super soft Kleenex complete with lotion. It didn't really help and every blow was accelerating agony.

As always, I started looking for a better way. There just had to be someway to deal with my runny nose without the raw burning. Not only did I find a good solution, as always, my life is an open book with all my HairBoutique.com friends.

Burts To The Rescue

One of the advantages of working at HairBoutique.com is that the ever expanding warehouse is right around the corner from my office. If I show up at the main entrance with my checkbook or credit cards I can instantly select from the over 1,000 products that are in stock. Talk about instant gratification.

With this in mind, I staggered back to the store with checkbook in hand and bought some "nose" remedies. In the past I have personally found that Noxzema Lotion in the pump bottle has worked best for my nose. Unfortunately there was no Noxzema to be had and I wanted relief. Immediate relief.

On top of the raw and hamburger red nose, I was also suffering from super dry flaky lips from all the contact with the Kleenex.

I decide to purchase the Burt's Bees Lip Balm in the tube (versus in the tin) to help my chapped lips. WOW. Talk about instant relief, my lips were immediately softer and the chapping was greatly diminished.

Since the lip balm worked so well I decided to browse for a nose softening aid. I checked out all the different skin care products and asked about the ingredients. After much internal debate on what might work best, I settled for a bottle of Burt's Bees Chamomile Complexion Mist.

The Chamomile Complexion Mist contains distilled water, cedar leaf oil, lavender oil, sandalwood oil, chamomile oil, ylang ylang oil and is 100% Natural. I sprayed some directly onto my nose, being careful to close my eyes. Yes it felt cooling and it did help a little bit. It instantly felt cool and calming to my raw nose but something still was missing. I guess I still missed the creaminess of my normal Noxema.

If you prefer a mist to a heavy cream, the Chamomile can definitely work for raw noses and skin. I am so used to the soothing cream that I decided to look for something else that might help my beat up nose.

I trudged back to the warehouse and explained my quest for a soft, soothing cream. After some debate with other HairBoutique.com folks I decided to try the Burt's Bees Diaper Cream. We all figured that if the Diaper Cream was designed for sensitive sore bottoms, why not my nose? I wanted something creamy and soft. So I purchased the Diaper Cream. After just one blob I knew that I had found heaven.

Burt's Diaper Cream includes zinc oxide which is what all the lifeguards wear to protect their delicate sun exposed noses. It also includes sweet almond oil, beeswax, tocopheryl acetate & tocopherol (vitamin E), jojoba oil, lavender oil, retinyl palmitate (vitamin A), extracts of rosemary, lavender, calendula, chamomile, rose petal and comfrey root. It is 94.65% natural and instantly made my rough, irritated skin feel softer and less irritated. Ahhhh. Now I know what babies feel when they get relief from chapped bottoms.

The only downside to the Burt's Diaper cream was the funny looks I got as I wandered around the rest of office with the tube in my hands. After the first time someone asked, I decided not to bother trying to explain. At any rate, what a cool find. I figured I would never get to try the Diaper cream since my days of diaper rash are long gone.

Karen's Rating

On my own scale of 1-10, 10 being the best, I give, Burts Bees Lip Balm and Burt's Bees Diaper Cream a big giant 10! Although a great product, for the relief of dry nose skin, I give the Burt's Bees Chamomile Mist a 8.
