Hot Summer Hairstyles For 2006

Introduction

Jennifer Love Hewitt Short Bob w/Side Fringe 2006

History of hairstyles for Summer months has shown one clear trend. Hair that is easy, casual and finger tousled is always tops.

Yes, its true that the hot trends from the celebrity red carpets and Spring runways do have an impact. However, styles that require a lot of styling time or the use of heavy styling products will fall by the wayside as the Summer months heat up.

After chatting with celebrity hairdressers Ken Paves and Robert Hallowell, the following hairstyles seem destined to be big winners for Summer 2006:

1. Braids - Whether worn as a single strand on long tresses or carefully constructed on short strands, braids are destined to be hot. Braids are always popular during Summer months because they can be modified to work on just about any face shape, hair texture or length.

Braids can also be combined with easy twists for an easy but more elegant style. French braids used as simple accents are also fun and refreshing.

2. Classic Bobs - Robert Hallowell recently explained that a classic bob, as defined by Vidal Sassoon, consists of hair from the part to the ends that is all one length. Classic Bobs can be super short or shoulder length.

Modified bobs are classic bobs with long fringes, modified shaggy edges or a variety of layers. Because they are so easy to wear and flattering for every face shape, Robert believes that soft, swingy, beautiful Bobs are going to be very popular for the Summer of 2006. Actress Jennifer Love Hewitt recently appeared in a gorgeous short bob with a long side-swept fringe.

3. Natural Textures - Ken Paves notes that women want to "do their own texture thing" and honor the hair that they were born with. This means, according to Ken, lots of natural curls, waves and general textures. Ken believes that women want to feel pretty in their own tresses and honor their hair moods of the moment. He sees a continued explosion of tousled waves, soft curls and ringlets and hair that is worn with sass.

4. Ponytails - Hollywood has gone mad for the pony. Everyone from Charlize Theron to Cameron Diaz has sashsayed down the Red Carpets with a variety of pony styles.

Summer is a fabulous time to pull hair back into a loose tail that can be worn high up on the head to show off a beautiful neck or casually pulled to one side in a side tail. Pigtails are also popular demonstrated by the famous supermodel Twiggy on a recent America's Next Top Model Show.

5. Fat hair - For special nights out during the Summer months, expect to see a continued trend towards more volume. Especially along the crown and with modified pompadours and hairline quiffs. Add-on strands will also be popular for special evenings but will play a smaller role during hot days at the beach.

6. Natural Looks - Soft, pretty California Chic hair crossed with the girl next store strands will be popular.

Look for these styles to be adorned with vibrantly hued silk flowers, pony elastics and summery headbands. The bright bold hair accessories will pay homage to the beautiful colors that are showing up on Spring and Summer fashions.

7. Boho Twists - Boho hairstyles that feature messy twists or side rolls are expected to be very popular for evenings out. Contrasting hued bobby pins are also popular ala Sarah Jessica Parker.

8. Tousled Tops - Short crops and chops that are messy and heavily tousled are also becoming more popular. With the easy availability of hair extensions, wigs and add-on hair pieces, many will embrace a shorter style for hot, humid summer months.

Summary

The trends for 2006 Summer Hairstyles combine a "do your own hair texture thing" with a twist of honor for the Boho movement and an ongoing interest in boldly hued hair accessories that offer relief from hot, humid temps. Regardless of the Summer hairstyle you adopt, remember to honor your hair's natural type, texture and condition. Select styles that work best with your face shape and maintenance preference.
