Edie Falco's Power Pixie Short Hairstyle

Introduction

Edie Falco

Edith "Edie" Falco was born July 5, 1963 in Brooklyn, New York to Judith Anderson, an actress and Frank Falco, a jazz drummer. Edie's father is Italian American and her mother is Swedish American.

She is a multi-award winning television, film and stage actress, known for her lead roles as both Carmela Soprano on the HBO series The Sopranos, and the titular character of Jackie Payton on the Showtime series "Nurse Jackie". She was recently nominated for a 2011 Golden Globe Award for her Jackie portrayal.

Edie's uncle is novelist, playwright and poet Edward Falco, an English professor at Virginia Tech in Blacksburg. She was raised in Northport and West Islip, on Long Island.

Edie has an adopted son named Anderson Falco and an adopted daughter named Macy Falco.

Nurse Jackie

Known for her acting chops in drama, Edie felt she didn't have the talent to perform in comedy. How wrong she was. When Edie first read the script for "Nurse Jackie" about a harried emergency room nurse with a secret addiction to prescription pain medicine, the dark script had virtually no laughs.

Executive producers Linda Wallem and Liz Brixius refashioned "Nurse Jackie" as a dark comedy, rather than a serious drama. However, Edie told the LA Times she didn't think of the "Nurse Jackie" as far afield from series she had done like "The Sopranos" or "Oz," which lace their grimness with humor.

Drawing Inspiration From Her Own Demons

As a young acting student Edie admits to being a fan of Meryl Streep's in "Sophie's Choice" and admits she "always thought of myself as kind of dark, actually. I was a complicated kid."

Edie can relate to Nurse Jackie's addiction issues. She had confessed to struggling with alcohol when she was first trying to make it as an actor.

For years, she strung together small roles in off-Broadway plays and TV shows like "Law & Order" to pay the bills until HBO picked up"The Sopranos" about a New Jersey mobster and his fractious family.

Back To Edie's Pixie

In the role of Carmela Soprano the actress wore her hair long, blonde and neatly coiffed, as if she had weekly appointments at the salon along with regular mani/pedi dates.

Nurse Jackie is a hard working mom who doesn't have lots of time, money or need to have a high maintenance hairstyle. Her super short layered pixie hairstyle is perfect for an ER nurse who is often dodging blood guts and other human byproducts.

The short crop also suits her serious personality. Nurse Jackie Peyton is a no frills, no nonsense wife and mother who is just trying to keep it all together. Definitely not a person who would worry about dealing with unnecessary hair styling pressures.

For her TV role as Nurse Jackie Edie wears her hair in alternating tousled and sleek styles. Changing up her Power Pixie Hairstyle is as easy as changing the styling products she uses.

For the Red Carpet her hair is usually styled sleekly and brushed up and off her forehead with lots of body and some volume built in around the crown. Edie likes to add a thin headband to dress up her short style with great results.

For less formal off-camera events she often wears her hair finger tousled.

Hairstyle: Power Pixie Hairstyle

Since her hair is so short, it's obvious Edie doesn't utilize any type of wigs or add-on hair for her various cropped hairstyles.

Hairstyle Color: Warm sandy blonde base

Hairstyle Highlights/Lowlights: If you look closely you will see what appears to be ribbons of lighter golden and white blonde highlights with deeper golden blonde lowlights which gives Edie's hair warmth, depth and volume.

The whiter blonde highlights interwoven around the hairline and strategically placed against the softer sandy blonde base also helps to bring out a beautiful shine.

Texture: Edie appears to have medium to medium thick hair in excellent shape with a tendency towards natural waves. Her hair appears to have very slight layers skillfully placed around the perimeter of her hairstyle.

Fringe: Edie rarely wears a fringe which may be due to the fact her hair is so short. There doesn't appear to be enough length to fashion into any type of fringe.

Lately on "Nurse Jackie" the star has been seen with her sandy blonde tresses cascading from a deep side part directing the front section of hair near the hairline over to the opposite side of her face.

Sometimes Edie's hair is brushed off her hairline in such a style that no obvious part is clearly visible. She also plays with soft peaks of hair along the hairline brushed up into an edgy spike.

Face Shape: Edie's face shape is primarily oval. She has soft cheekbones and a slightly rounded chin. Some face shape watchers might believe she has more prominent jaws giving a hint of a square face shape.

Hairstyle Works Best: Edie's hairstyle works best for tresses which are ear length or above either all one length or with layers.

The best texture for recreating this hairstyle is straighter hair with some bend or natural waves.

Of course tight curls might not work with this hairstyle, but very light curls which can be temporarily straightened could be an option. The hairstyle can be copied with or without a fringe.

Hair Tools Required: This style can be easily air dryed and finger tousled. It's basically a wet, tousle and go hairstyle.

If you prefer a more finished or textured look you can utilize a blow dryer, small barrel curling iron or flat iron, 100% boar bristle round brush, long tail comb, leave-in conditioner, defrisant, styling spray and/or cream, sculpting hairspray, shine spray and/or serum drops.

Hair wax is optional for creating different textures. If you want lots of volume you may want to consider using a volumizing program with shampoo and root spray.

To add strategically placed volume, fullness and/or length you may wish to play with clip-in hair extensions, clip in fringes or a clip-in pony for a completely different look.

Steal Edie's Hair Style

This style is idea for short to very short tresses which are medium in thickness. Follow the steps below to re-create Edie's tousled or sleek choppy hair style:

Start with a short precision hair cut which is all one length or with very slight layers throughout.

1. Start by washing your hair in lukewarm water with a product designed to add back moisture and to treat colored or highlighted hair with tender loving care.

2. Rinse hair well and then apply a moisturizing rinse-out conditioner focusing the products on the areas of the hair that are most dry or damaged. If your hair is fine or thin you may wish to skip this option.

3. For extra conditioning substitute the rinse-out conditioner with a deep conditioner that is allowed to soak down into the hair's shaft.

4. Finish with a cool/cold rinse to lock in moisture and add additional shine.

5. Towel blot to remove excess moisture. Apply a conditioning detangling spray or leave-in conditioner and detangle strands with a wide tooth comb working from the ends to the roots. Create either a center or side part, depending on how you wish to style your hair.

Note: If your hair is prone to frizzing apply a defrisant product or mix with your other styling products. Many celebrities are big fans of Phytodefrisant.

6. For fullness, lift and volume throughout the crown, apply a volume enhancing product to the roots. Distribute a straightening balm to the rest of the strands distributing from below the roots to the ends.

7. Use a long tail comb to create desired part. Separate strands into 1" to 2 1/2" sections and blow dry with a boar's bristle round brush. For added volume you may wish to consider a vent brush. Blow dry the top sections of hair using fingers to lift individual top strands and direct the air flow from ends to roots.

Note: If hair is naturally curly, do not use fingers to blow dry since this can add to frizz. Use a boar's bristle brush instead.

8. When hair is completely dry you may opt to touch up the strands with a straightening iron to achieve sleeker panels of hair.

Or you may prefer to use a curling iron (or hot rollers) to turn under the ends or add more volume and lift to the crown area.

9. Apply a shine serum, shine spray or hair cream to seal in moisture and add a soft shine similar to Edie's. Hairspray is optional.

Summary

Regardless whether "Nurse Jackie" is classified as a comedy or a drama. Edie does a spectacular job of portraying Nurse Jackie Payton with a mixture of cynicism and humor.

The series debuted as Showtime's strongest new show ever, averaging 1.22 million viewers for its Monday premieres and drawing a cumulative audience of 3.8 million viewers on average each week. The second season began March 22, 2010 and finished before Summer of 2010. A third season is expected to be filmed for 2011. If you get a chance to watch it be sure you do. You won't want to miss it.

Never brush your hair when it is wet. Hair is in its most fragile condition when it is wet. Use a wide tooth comb on wetheads.
