Celebrity Hair: Jessica Biel's Style

Introduction

Jessica Biel 2005 MTV Movie Awards Shrine Auditorium Los Angeles, CA

Jessica Biel recently was trashed by the MSN fashion police for her red carpet appearance at the 2005 MTV Awards in a vibrantly hued dress. The fashion critics deemed her attire a "graphic, garish get-up" which they commented was "criminal" on a "23-year-old hottie".

Whether you agree or not, when I saw the photo (shown above at the top) I was wondering what was up with her tresses? While the Pisces (March 3, 1982) actress is not famous for her elaborate Red Carpet hairstyles, she generally selects lower key styles that are carefully coiffed.

Whether she appears with her fine shoulder length hair wore in a straight silky style or pinned up, she usually has a simple but elegant style.

For the MTV Awards her blonde strands appear to be messy and uncombed in a updo that seems very last minute. One advantage to the bedhead updo style was the fact that her wood and chain earrings, which are the latest fashion trend, were in full view. Unfortunately, the hairdo was not her most flattering.

Punked By Ashton Kutcher

Jessica was born in the small town of Ely, Minnesota. When she was young her family moved to Boulder, Colorado where she grew up.

The beauty was Punked in 2004 by Ashton Kutcher on MTV. Unbeknownst to the former 7th Heaven regular, Ashton had arranged for a "fan" to leave his obnoxious teen-aged son temporarily in Jessica's presence while she was trying to have a quiet meal with a friend.

As the secretly filmed scene developed, the teen son accelerated his inappropriate comments directed at the beautiful star.

Since Jessica was unaware that she was being "set up" by Kutcher and his crew, she showed her true colors.

Jessica handled the entire situation with grace and poise. She came across as a very real person who was very polite and soft spoken. Certainly not easy when dealing with a "fan" that was mouthing off.

From Innocence To Posing Semi-Nude

Jessica Biel

Jessica's flawless skin coupled with silky locks gave her a wholesome innocence that she ported into the character of Mary Camden on the WB's popular 7th Heaven from 1996 until 2001. Initially the innocent reputation served her well.

After she had been on 7th Heaven for several seasons, Jessica grew concerned that fans would not be able to see her in any other roles. To try and balance the good girl rap and to break her contract with 7th Heaven, she took drastic action and posed topless, while underage, for the a 2000 Gear Magazine issue. The production company of 7th Heaven was not thrilled and a lawsuit was filed against Gear.

Mane Changes

After all was said and done, Jessica ultimately left 7th Heaven and started acting in movies including playing a hard core vampire slayer in Blade Trinity which was released in late 2004.

When interviewed by InStyle Magazine for the September 2004 issue she shared one of her hair-disaster stories. She recounted how she took control of the scissors when she was 17 and chopped her hair "up to my ears". She had a "blunt cut all the way around" and used to "hairspray it until it was stiff".

Steal Jessica's Silky Straight Style

Jessica Biel

Jessica was born with naturally fine hair that often morphs back and forth between her natural brunette and a wide array of blonde hues. She confessed to InStyle Magazine (September 2004) that her hair tends to be "very dry" because it is always "being dyed blonde for a role".

The actress appears to prefer straight hairstyles that are parted slightly off center and then worn swept back off her mostly oval shaped face. Jessica has a hint of squared angles throughout her cheek area, but arranges her strands so that they form a soft cascade at the center of her cheekbones.

The star told InStyle that as a result of all the chemical hair coloring her strands have endured, she loves any products that "put moisture back and makes it less tangled".

To get Jessica's straight style, complete the following steps?

Step 1: Shampoo and condition your hair with your normal products designed for your current hair type, texture and condition. If your hair is highlighted like Jessica's use either a moisture enhanced or color enriched formula. If your hair is dry from chemical processing, consider diluting the shampoo formula to protect your strands.

(Shampoo products to try: Phyto - Phytojoba Hydrating Shampoo, PHYTO - Dry Hair System, Phyto - PhytoBrush Shampoo).

If you have fine or thin hair, use a volume enhancing shampoo. Skip any rinse-out conditioning products that might make hair too soft and flat. If you must use a rinse-out conditioner, make sure that you limit how much you use and that you concentrate on the middle to the ends.

Rinse well with a cool water spray which helps build natural volume and increases shine.

Step 2: Towel blow strands. Detangle strands from the ends to the roots.

Step 3: Apply a volumizing gel or similar products to the roots. To protect against heat and add body, distribute a leave-in conditioner, mousse or gel from the top of the ears to the ends. Distribute well.

Note: If your hair tends to frizz or is naturally wavy or curly, you may wish to combine a volume product for the roots with a smoothing serum for the rest of the hair.

Anti-Frizz Product to try: Rene Furterer - Control Emulsion Anti-Frizz. Root volume products to try: Phyto - Phytovolume Actif, PHYTO - Volume System, Phyto - Phytovolume Shampoo.

Step 4: Working from side to side use a boar's head or natural round brush combined with your blow dryer to straighten and build in body.

Step 5: To build in volume at the roots, use the round brush to lift your tresses up and direct the air flow from the dryer up the hair shaft to the root. This "ruffles the cuticle" helping to add natural fullness.

If you prefer, bend over at the waist and direct the air flow of the dryer up the hair shaft towards the roots. When hair is 90% dry, bend right side up and work on the hair from the ears down to the ends.

Note: Hairdressers differ on their opinion whether it is beneficial to blow hair "upside down" or not. Use your own judgment on which technique works best for you.

Step 6: Use the round brush to straighten the remainder of the hair by rolling individual sections carefully around the brush and directing the air flow down the hair shaft towards the ends. This helps to straighten, close the cuticle and adds shine.

Step 7: While drying the ends, use the round brush to turn the ends under slightly while finishing.

Step 8: Seal the style by finishing up with a blast of cool air, if possible, from your blow dryer.

Step 9: Carefully comb in your desired part.

Step 10: To add soft curls and waves to Jessica's straight hairstyle, separate hair into 2-3 inch sections. Working from side to side near the roots, use a 1 1/2" curling iron and create big curls with the iron.

Release each curl and then carefully pin into place with a bobby pin. Continue to curl and pin until the entire hair has been finished. Let the curls air dry until 100% cool

Step 11: Spray the pinned curls with a strong hold hairspray or volume spray. Carefully unpin the curls. (Hairsprays to try: PhytoPro - Instant Hold Spray #15).

Step 12: Apply a tiny drop of shine serum, drops or spray into the balms of your hands. Lightly brush the palms over the top of your style and you are ready to rock ala Jessica Biel style.

(Shine products to try: Phyto - PhytoLisse (Formerly Phytodefrisant RelaxSerum)

If you prefer, you can use a curling iron to turn under the ends a little bit or use a straight iron on selected pieces around the face to give a contrasting texture to the look.

Summary

In the past Jessica confessed to InStyle Magazine she doesn't have "the ability to do her own hair" and can "barely blow dry it straight". Somehow she manages to look great, regardless whether she's blow dryer challenged or not.

Jessica Biel is one of the three Jessica's (Alba, Simpson) that made it in the Top 20 of Maxim's Top 100 for 2005. Obviously she is doing something right after all.

After you have removed hot rollers from you hair let the curls set for a minute. Use fingers or pick to carefully arrange curls so they don't droop.
