If you've ever experienced bun envy but felt you couldn't re-create the stunning updo styles worn by a beautiful celebrity like Kristen Bell (Veronica Mars, Heroes, Gossip Girls, House Of Lies), think again.

With the right hairstyling products, tools and a little practice, you can whip a variety of buns instantly into shape on top of your head.

It used to be that buns, twists and related updos were limited to only those with shoulder skimming tresses. This is no longer true.

With the introduction of fusion and clip-in hair extensions, anyone with a minimum of 6" of hair can "instantly grow" enough strands to mold them into bun-worthy shape.

There is an easy rule of thumb. If you can pull your hair back into a ponytail, you can create a variety of different buns.

Regardless whether you need clip-in or fusion hair extensions, if you can make a pony, you can make a beautiful bun.

To re-create the simple yet elegant bun worn by Kristen at the Monique Lhuillier Boutique Opening follow the quick and easy steps listed below:

1. Cleanse pre-conditioned, detangled hair in lukewarm water with desired product type and strength. 2. Rinse well, apply desired conditioner and detangle in horizontal sections from ends to the roots. Use fingers or a hair-friendly wide-tooth comb. 3. Once hair is completely detangled, rinse out conditioner. Finish with a cool/cold rinse. 4. Towel blot hair to remove excess water. 5. Apply desired styling cocktail which may include, but not be limited to, leave-in conditioner, defrisant, mousse, styling gel, cream or similar. 6. Separate hair into 2" individual horizontal strands. Clip rest of hair out of the way. 7. Blow dry hair straight with a paddle or round brush until 100% dry. 8. Apply a tiny bit of styling serum or cream to fingers and rake over hair to to help secure buns, twists or similar. 9. Using fingers or a brush, pull hair back off the face into a ponytail. 10. Position the base of the pony near the neck right above the nape of the neck. 11. Capture the ponytail with a bungee, Blax or other hair friendly elastic in the same color of the hair. 12. Lift pony from ends and twist clockwise until entire pony is twisted. As you twist the pony it will eventually twist over on itself forming a knot of twist. Use fingers to mold and shape. Once this occurs, pin in place in desired shape and position. 14. Apply a 1-2 drops of shine serum product in the palms of the hands. Massage together and then lightly brush over the top of the entire head and bun.

Hair Products Are Important

Some hair experts suggest creating buns, hair twists, chignons or updos on second day hair since the natural oils will make the hair easier to style.

Others like to create hair buns on newly cleansed hair which is prepped with a range of creams, gels, sprays or similar to give the hair the appropriate hold.

Whether you prefer your hair styled with aged or newly cleansed strands is up to you and the look you wish to create.

Skinny Elastic Headband Trick

Once great way to keep any type of chignon, twist or bun looking finished and sleek is to add a skinny elastic band at or slightly behind the hairline.

The headband, which can be the same color as your hair or contrasting colors hold the hair neatly off the hairline and positioned tightly against the top of the head.

One of the advantages to having the bun pulled tightly from the hairline is that it provides a beautifully finished and more formal look.

Alternative Hair Buns

The beauty of hair twists, buns and similar is that there is no right or wrong method for creating them.

Actress Kristen Bell is famous for wearing her hair in a wide range of hair twists, chignons, buns and similar.

By altering the hair's base texture and the degree of elevation, a hair twist can instantly morph into a wide range of shapes.

Depending upon the event, twists, buns and chignons can be combined with an array of bangs, parts and root volume.
