How To Create Stunning Spiral Curls

Introduction

Naturally curly girls may sometimes curse their tight chunky curls, but wavy and straighter tressed girls often lust after a head of illusive shimmering spirals.  Even naturally curly doesn't guarantee perfect spirals worn by Julia Roberts, Julia Louis-Dreyfus (shown to the side from her new hit show - Watching Ellie on NBC) and Deborah Messing.  Many celebrity stylists often resort to the secret aide of a curling iron to create picture perfect curls. Whether you are blessed with natural curls or waves that need a little shaping or have straight strands, with a little time and the right tips, spirals curls can be yours.   Keep in mind that the straighter your hair, the more time it will take to achieve perfect ringlets. Allow plenty of time to work with a curling iron or hot rollers.

Best Hair Candidates

Spiral curls are best created on hair that is shoulder length or slightly longer and cut with lots of layers in varying lengths.  Super curly or wavy hair should have long layers to help add weight to the curls and waves.  Medium to thick hair has an advantage over fine or thin hair.  Spirals can be created on straight strands but it will involve additional steps.  Naturally curly or wavy hair is ideal for perfect spirals.

Naturally Curly Candidates

Shampoo hair with your normal curl supporting shampoo and rinse-out conditioner.  Blot hair with an absorbent towel to remove excess water.  Apply a good leave-in conditioner and/or if appropriate, a defrisant product like award winning  Phytotherathrie's Defrisant Balm. Detangle with a wide toothed comb or a pick.  Use a good curl defining styling gel and smooth it through your hair 1/2 inch from your roots to your ends. Blow dry hair with a long finger diffuser to lift and separate curls.  When hair is completely dry start at one side of your head and work on two inch sections of hair at a time.

Use a Conair Steam Mist Spiral Curling Iron on each individual section of hair at a time.  Shape curls into spirals with the iron as you work from strand to strand.  The advantage to a Steam Mist Iron is that it adds moisture as it curls and prevents hair from getting too dry from the heat of the iron.

Remember that the larger the barrel of the curling or spiral iron, the bigger the curls.  For small curls select a 3/4 to 1" barrel.  For larger curls select up to 1 1/2" barrel.

Be sure to keep each strand wrapped around the iron for a few minutes.  Adjust the time according to your hair texture and needs.  For some people they will only need to use the iron for a few seconds.  Thicker hair may require up to a few minutes.

After you remove each curl from the iron, let it completely cool before touching it.  Do not brush or touch the newly created curls.  When you have finished curling your entire head, spray with a good spray.  If any of the curls are not as tight as you would like, use the curling iron to spot curl.

Carefully arrange the spirals with your fingers.  Always finish with a light to medium spray to allow your hair to have movement.

If you want to try an optional way to create spiral curls check out the new Conair Swizzlers which are flexible spiral rod rollers. The Swizzlers will create softer spirals since they are bendable rods.  For a different spiral curl, try these revolutionary new curlers that don't require any clips to stay in place.

Naturally Wavy Candidates

Shampoo hair with your normal wave supporting shampoo and rinse-out conditioner.  Blot hair with an absorbent towel to remove excess water.  Apply a good leave-in conditioner and/or if appropriate, a defrisant product like award winning  Phytotherathrie's Defrisant Balm. Detangle with a wide toothed comb or a pick.

Use a peach sized amount of mousse and smooth it through your hair 1/2 inch from your roots to your ends. Blow dry hair with a diffuser attachment without brushing.  Use fingers sparingly to lift and separate hair as you dry. Be careful to avoid brushing or tousling your hair as much as possible. When hair is completely dry start at one side of your head and work on two inch sections of hair at a time.

Straight Hair Candidates

Shampoo hair with a cleansing shampoo.  Avoid using a rinse out conditioner if it makes your hair too soft or flat. If your hair tangles, spritz while wet with a good detangling spray.  Detangle with a wide toothed comb or a pick.  Blot hair with an absorbent towel to remove excess water.  Apply a good curl enhancing or styling gel.. Smooth the gel through your hair 1/2 inch from your roots to your ends. Blow dry hair with a diffuser attachment without brushing.  Use fingers sparingly to lift and separate hair as you dry. Be careful to avoid brushing or tousling your hair as much as possible.

Note: If your hair has been chemically straightened or relaxed be advised that it may not hold the curl from the curling iron or curlers.

When hair is completely dry start at one side of your head and work on two inch sections of hair at a time.  Roll each individual section of hair with fast heating large Conair Hot Rollers. Roll the hair in a spiral pattern as if you were creating a spiral curl with the curler.  Fasten the curler in place.

If you don't have enough rollers to do your entire head, as you unfasten the newly created curls, pin them carefully in place with a clip or pin.  Let the roller re-heat and then apply to a section that has not been curled.  Keep the curlers in your hair until they have completely cooled which should be equivalent to 30 minutes.  Adjust the time according to your hair texture and needs.  Remove the curlers and avoid brushing or touching the curls until you are ready to style.

When you hair is completely cool, use a boars' head paddle brush and lightly brush through the curls to smooth.
