Twist N Shout: Barbara Lhotan's Hot New Updo
Karen Marie Shelton
Date: 5/1/2002, 10/10/2002, 3/2/2003

Introduction

Hair magician, and master stylist, Barbara Lhotan, has created an elegant twisted updo style shouts pure hair fantasy.  Perfect for a Wedding or special dressy event like a Homecoming dance, Formal or Prom, this stunning work of hair art requires hair that is medium (shoulder length) or slightly longer in length with medium thickness.

Although this inspired updo could work with temporarily straightened naturally curly or wavy hair, the style works best on hair that is straight.

This gorgeous do is best crafted by an experienced stylist that can work from all angles to smooth, twist and fold the hair into a stunning style.  Unless you have lots of practice working with you hair or creating similar styles at home, this style is best left to the professionals.

Barbara has graciously recreated her design in a step-by-step format that you can take to your stylist for reference.

Step By Step Instructions

This style is best created on “day old” hair that is not freshly shampooed.  The style will have better traction on hair that has some natural oil.

1.  Make a pony tail on top of the head that sits near the back of the
crown.

2.  Use an elastic "hair friendly" band to hold the ponytail in place.  Use a band that you don't mind cutting since you will be doing so in a future step.

3.  Take the hair in the ponytail and starting at the base "stack" 1 1/2" to 2" hot rollers working to the top to create a slight bend in the hair.

4.  Work from the bottom of the ponytail to the top to create a slight bend in the hair.

5.  Leave the curlers in place until they have completely cooled.

6.  Once the curlers have completely cooled cut the elastic band with a scissors to remove the ponytail.

7. Carefully unwind and remove the curlers. Carefully unwind and remove the curlers.

8.  Lift the crown hair up from the new square parting.  Using the bristles of the boar’s head brush gently tease the hair.

9-10.  Tease down the center section only - separate the hair at the corners behind the ears. Tease on the top hair, not at the nape.

11.  Take the middle section of hair to the top of the head.  Smooth with a comb and secure with 4 pins.

12.  Section behind the ear and then divide the hair into two section
separately.  Then tease them together.

13-14.  With the right hand behind the hair bring the pony tail piece towards the back of the ear and fold.  Leave the tail piece free.

15. Spray hair and repeat with the opposite side.

16-17.  Leave the lower section down.  Make large barrel curls with two  fingers leaving the ends out.  Pin into place. Pin a curl on either side.

18.  Pull out a few strands of hair around the face and twist them gently to soften the look.

Conclusion

Spray the finished style with a super holding hairspray to guarantee long lasting results.  Apply a few drops of shine to the palms of your hands and carefully smooth over the top of the do to add instant sparkle.

This sleek and sophisticated updo can be instantly dressed up with well placed clusters of Austrian Crystal encrusted hair pins, jeweled magnets or floating baubbles that catch glimmers of light.  Give the look an instantly softer appeal by pinning a large fresh flower on either side of the finished updo.
