Hayden Panettiere's Disasterous Hair Color Journey - Her Hair Started Falling Out

Scream 4 star Hayden Panettiere was on Ellen recently wearing her famous buttery blonde tresses, which are naturally curly/wavy pulled back off her face and captured in back in a very small ponytail.

Ellen asked the former Heroes star "did you change your hair?  Your hair looks the same to me.  What did you do to it?"

Hayden replayed "now it does, it's the magic of a couple hours of hair and makeup."

She continued "but I did, I cut my hair all off, I dyed it red, I kinda rebelled from the whole Heroes thing from when the show ended and chopped it all off."  Hayden noted "my hair all started falling out because I dyed it red and then tried to dye it back blonde."  Her red turned into a spicy ginger hue.

Ellen asked why Hayden why she wanted to go red.

The petite actress who is currently involved with boxer Wladimir Klitschko said "well I wanted to do brown, I wanted to do dark.  I like drastic changes.  When I do something I like to chop it all off or keep it long or red or black or whatever.  And then I tried to dye it back blonde and my hair just about fell out of my head.  It was terrible."

Ellen said "it looks good now" and Hayden replied "thank you, it's taken a lot of nursing back.  I tried to go back blonde and went to a calico color.  I would apologize to people (for my hair color)."  She said "I met my boyfriend's family for the first time when I had this hair color (calico) and I was like 'look, I really don't look like this all the time.  I swear.  OK, just don't judge me (based on my hair color)."

Hayden's confessions about her botched hair color is not all that shocking.  What is surprising is that she apparently tried to make the color change at home alone.  Where was her team of celebrity hair stylists and colorists?

It's also not surprising that her goal of going from blonde to brunette resulted in a copper red.  Why?  When taking hair color from light buttery blonde like Hayden's to a brunette is often risky since the underlying hair color might pull a red rather than a dark brunette, which was her goal.

Although Hayden's hair now looks like it did before, she didn't explain who helped her get back to her desired blonde.  Nor did she explain how her hair is doing after all those chemicals.

Take it from Hayden, taking on a drastic hair color change is not for the faint of heart and should be performed by an expert hair colorists who really knows how to transition hair to bold new colors without major damage or drama.

Even worse, Hayden didn't look as beautiful with her accidental red which totally washed out her fair sun-kissed skin.

The Scream 4 star told Us Magazine at the NYC premiere of "Temple Grandin" she went red because "I was tried of being blonde and being....you get stuck in one thing and known for one thing and as a cheerleader or whatever that image."

Initially the star liked the red hair before realizing that she couldn't easily go back to blonde.  She also told Us "I'm typically a very fiery person anyway, but I just feel like cute and blonde and little is just so one category and one thing and changing my hair color, I feel like I don't have to overcompensate so much for the fact that I don't like being called cute or anything like that -- especially being all 5-foot-2 of me."

Daily Hair Tip
When towel drying wet hair never rub hair roughly or twist up into a towel. This will potentially damage delicate hair cuticles. Instead carefully blot hair with superabsortant towel and squeeze hair gently to remove moisture.
