Hairstyles, Fringes & Haircolor Trends From Redken & L'Oreal

When you update your  style, always start at the top, with your hair. "The fringe is massive," says Mana Dave, New Zealand's 2008 Hairdresser of the Year (awarded at Hair Expo Australia in Sydney) and part-owner of Blaze Salon in Newmarket, Auckland.

A hairdresser for 10 years, he's training and development coach for Redken New Zealand's 15-strong artistic team and was recently inducted into Redken 5th Avenue New York City's 2008 global collection team, made up of six people from different countries.

Dave and the Redken team create the company's International collection which determines the colors, looks, shapes and styles which filter from the catwalks to the salons.

Get Your Fringe Customized To Your Face Shape

Dave  explaines "If you get a fringe, it's important to get it tailored to your face shape - one fringe doesn't suit all," The Hairdresser of the Year says "A heavy fringe doesn't suit a fuller face, but a more broken-up, textured one will."

Long Hair Isn't Always For Everyone

Dave doesn't believe long hair is for everyone.  He says "Long hair is big, but there's something for everyone."  He notes "New Zealand women really embrace short hair and they don't have a hang- up about shorter hair like women overseas do, so they are really open to shorter styles."

The Victoria Beckham bob - short at the back and long and framing the face at the front - and its permutations have made many women reconsider shorter hair, and cuts are strongly geometric.

Long Hair Has To Be Healthy, Shiny And Maintained

Long hair has to be shiny, Dave says. "If you love long hair, look after it. Get it cut regularly because it doesn't look good when the ends split and splay.  Get a salon treatment on a regular basis - at least every eight weeks - and in the winter set aside an evening once a week to put a treatment through yourself.

"In winter hair can dry out with the cold outside and the heaters inside, particularly if you dry and iron your hair. Look after it like you do your skin and put lots of moisture in."

Hair Color Trends Are Rich And Vibrant

Melissa Hita, L'Oreal Professionnel senior technical consultant, advises thinking of sweet treats when you go to color your hair this winter.  She reports "Autumn-winter trends are inspired by the emotional connection we have with food, and particularly sweet desserts and chocolate. The colour palette is rich and vibrant."

Hita says "L'Oreal Professionnel Luocolor infuses hair with citrus notes, such as chocolate with kiwi or cherry, giving hair translucent luminous coverage with light-reflecting color.  Majirel shades are cool browns with a satin finish to highlight and reflect a natural complexion."

Of course inspiration for the new hair colors come from international fashion catwalks, which have been displaying a trend towards metallics. Hair stylists have tempered the look with natural, reflective colours and wearable styles.

Up-date Your Look By Changing Your Hairstyle

"An easy way to up-date your look is to change your hairstyle. Try a new fringe or change the side you would normally wear your hair," Hita advises.  Winter hair trends include "cocktailing" with styling products that add volume and shine, as well as protection from hot irons.

Both Dave and Hita say the fringe will survive summer.  Other looks will be soft curls and a more "dishevelled" look, and long hair that is smooth and glossy.
