Many people in the hair world were shocked when actress Demi Moore shaved her long raven black hair on camera for the film G.I. Jane which was released in 1997.

Even though the movie has been out for close to 25 years, it's developed a cult following.

The movie is as popular in 2021 with some people as it was when it first appeared on movie screens.

Demi Moore Really Shaved Her Head On Film

Not only did Demi Moore really shave her head, and not hair pieces, she showcased her shaved head for months in public while her hair grew back.

The actress willingly agree to have her head shaved because she believed in her role and in the movie.

In her memoir Inside Out, Moore called GI Jane her proudest professional achievement.

She certainly prepared for the part and was willing to shave her beautiful strands while putting her body through the paces.

How Demi Moore Worked Her Body For The G.I. Jane Role

In the Cosmopolitan September 1997 issue in the Best Undressed Column there was instructions on how to copy Demi Moore's body in the famous flick, G.I. Jane.

Demi powered out an intensive military training program to muscle up for her starring role as a smart, savvy navy intelligence officer who enlists in the navy SEAL program.

Demi's stunt double jumped out of helicopters, planes, and got beat up by Command Master Chief John James Urgayle (Viggo Mortense), but the actress still showcased her super hard body create during her vigorous pre-film training.

According to Cosmopolitan Magazine, former navy SEAL Keith Woulard and ex-marine Phil Neilson designed a special workout to whip Demi into shape for her scenes in the film.

Although Demi did use a stunt double (Leigh Hennessy), who also had to shave her head for the film, the actress did perform some of the less dangerous stunts.

Each of Demi's 12-hour training days began with roll call at 5:30 am, just like in the military.

For the first two hours the actress performed an intense physical training sequence including the exercises listed below.

Obstacle Course

Next came a challenging obstacle course.

Moore climbed a 60 foot cargo net, pulled herself up a 25-foot rope, scaled three 8 to 15 foot walls, ran across moving balancing logs, then swung her body to the ends of a 30-foot monkey bar.  She was an inspiration in her training.

Moore jogged four miles, then hit the ocean for a half-mile swim in full camouflage fatigues while helping to pull a 90 pound boat.

Abdominals

Perform  sets of 15 reps for each of the following exercises:

Full sit-ups (Keep hands behind head)

Crunches

Rope-climbs Lie on back on floor with legs straight up in the air.  Pretend to climb a rope as you lift your upper body towards your legs.  Hold for four count, then release.)

Upper Body

PushUps (Do both traditional push-ups as well as one arm push ups).

Tricep push-ups (Do push-ups with hands together, thumbs side by side, to work your arms).

Dive-bomber pushups (From push-up position, raise your butt and lower your chest until it almost touches the ground).

Military press (Keep heels together with strict form with no pre-movement momentum).

Chest

Dumbbell Bench Press or (Swiss Ball Push-Ups)

Advanced Chest Flys

Cable Flys or (Swiss Ball Incline Flys)

Shoulders

Lateral Flys

Front Raise (Carried out in three to five sets during a shoulder workout)

Lower Body

Alternating Lunges

Squats (Bend down as if sitting in a chair then squeeze butt muscles to raise your body back up.)

Calf Raises (Grab a door or wall for balance and raise up on your toes, hold for four counts lower and then repeat)

Aerobics

Finish with 30 minutes of aerobics.

How did Moore do with her training?  One report from the set is that Moore puked during a run, but didn't quit and finished on time.

As far as her shaved head?  Demi happily too the clippers to her head and was proud of her dedication to the integrity of the film.

Now that's determination.
