It's a serious hair issue to consider.  Do you have frump-factor hair?

Liz Lemon of NBC's 30 Rock had bona fide frump-factor hair.

Ironically, Tina Fey has naturally good hair according to hairstylist Ann Minahan in the April 2010 issue of TV Guide.

The brunette superstar who's just launched NBC’s “Great News,”understood the importance of being believable as the super stressed Ms. Lemon.

Tina had to suffer for her art to properly portray the aggressively unkempt entertainment executive on the small screen.

Ms. Minahan, owner of NYC's Riah Salon, told TV Guide "forcing locks to look like that (Lemon's messy frump-factor hair) is no small feat."

In fact "it's as labor-intensive to get that (messy mane) result as it is to do good hair!"

Why did 30 Rock portray Liz Lemon as the Queen Of Frump-Factor Hair?

Because Tina had to look realistic as workaholic low maintenance Liz Lemon, Ms. Minahan had to make sure her hair appeared frumpy and dumpy.

Ms. Minahan confirmed Liz Lemon characters were alive and well off screen.  She often had frazzled female entertainment executives slumped over in her chair fighting messy manes.

High pressure jobs can leave little time for visits to the salon to create picture perfect strands.

Trying To Pinpoint What Constitutes The Frump-Factor

Bad hair is considered by many experts to be one of the strongest contributors to the frump-factor.

The frump-factor can be fleeting.  Some people can wear a dated hairstyle with flat curls, shapeless texture and misshapen layers and still look sizzling hot.

Others can have just one of the hair frump-factors and look like a major hair disaster.

Sometimes it's hard to  exactly pinpoint where frump starts and ends.

Yes, it's true, frump on one person can be cool on another.

Common Causes Of Frumpy Hair

Listed below are some of the most common causes of frumpy hair:

1.  A dated hairstyle

2.  Bad hair color

3.  Faded, dull, drab, flat hair color

4.  Overgrown roots

5.  Frizzy, fuzzy, chemically over-processed

6.  Dry, brittle strands

7.  Scraggly, split end

8.  Flat curls, shapeless texture, misshapen layers

9.  Unmanageable length, volume or overall shape

Even pulling hair up into a raggedy ponytail or misshaped bun can give hair an instant frump-factor.

Dated Hair Accessories

Hiding frumpy hair under unfashionable or dated hair accessories can only make the situation worse.

It's not necessarily the accessory, but more likely how it's been attached to the hair or what it's been paired with.

Some hair accessories are timeless, but when attached to frumpy hair the accessory can inherit the frump-factor.

Summary - Do You Have Frump-Factor Hair?

Flat hair with zero style might hint of the frump-factor, but there's always hope at the nearest salon.  A great hairstyle and color can make the world of difference.  The challenge?  Harried people with high pressure jobs, families or other responsibilities may not have the time necessary to get hair shaped up.
