The main cause of static electricity in hair is lack of moisture.  Hair can be robbed of moisture for a variety of reasons.  The good news?  You can fight hair static the DIY way without expensive hair products.

Although hair static can occur all year round, it's especially prevalent in Summer and Winter when heat and air conditioning systems can strip hair of moisture.

Other causes of hair static may include, but not be limited to the following:

1.  Use of hot or very hot water in showers which suck moisture from hair and skin.

2.  Chemicals in shampoo and some hair care products which leech moisture from strands.

3.  Use of moisture robbing hot styling tools such as blow-dryers, hot irons or rollers.

4.  Lack of natural oil in scalp.

5.  Improper nutrition or lack of necessary vitamins, minerals and herbs which add moisture to hair.

6.  Use of moisture robbing towels, bed clothes or clothes which results in dry lifeless tresses.

What Is Static Electricity?

Static electricity is an imbalance of electric charges within/or upon the surface of a variety of materials.  The charge remains present until it's able to move away by means of an electric current or electrical discharge.

This is in contrast with current electricity, which flows through wires or other conductors and transmits energy.

A static electric charge is created whenever two surfaces contact or separate and at least one of the surfaces has a high resistance to electrical current, becoming an electrical insulator.

Contact-induced charge separation may cause hair to stand up, causing static cling.  A good example of static cling is when a balloon rubbed against hair becomes negatively charged.

When near a wall, the charged balloon is attracted to positively charged particles in the wall at which point the balloon will cling to it, appearing to be suspended against gravity.
