San Francisco Giants pitcher Tim Lincecum (born June 15, 1984) is renowned for his unique and extravagant windup.  He's also known for his unusually thin wiry frame and his long flowing hippie hairstyles.  His long flowing locks netted Lincecum the nickname "The Freak".

With 2013 Spring Training right around the corner the pitcher is shaking up the media with big news. How?  Tim Lincecum cut off his hair.

The former long tressed Freak is now clean cut.  All of his long flowing locks have been transformed into a super short cut.  It's unclear why Lincecum made such a major hair transformation, but some believe he wanted a brand new fresh start after a roller coaster 2012 season.

Social media was abuzz with the news of the big chop after the right-hander recently arrived at the Giants' FanFest at AT&T Park without his iconic long locks.  Now the former long haired Freak who often wears nerd chic eyeglasses similar to Rachel Maddow's trademark Moscot NEBB eyeglasses is being compared to the MSNBC anchor.

The pitcher is also being compared to Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Harry Potter.

Why did Lincecum chop of his long hair?  He told The Associated Press "I wanted something different. Usually I'd take like six months between each haircut just because I was lazy."  Although it's quite a change, Lincecum also told the AP he likes the new look and "now it's kind of nice to have something to upkeep and take care of yourself."

The Tim Lincecum Bobblehead Doll

The pitcher's haircut isn't the first time his tresses made news.  Back in the Spring of 2010 the Giants announced a Tim Lincecum bobblehead doll giveaway promotion set for July 17th to the first 20,000 fans.

The purpose of the promo was to guarantee a sellout crowd at AT&T Park at 24 Willie Mays Plaza with people motivated to attend in order to receive the Lincecum doll.

To kick up the promotion a notch, The Giants announced six lucky fans would receive a Tiny Tim bobblehead in a baseball uniform which featured "synthetic" hair like a Halloween wig or the hair you might find on My Little Pony.

All the rest of the bobbles would have hair made out of the same material as the rest of the figurine.

Afterall, Tim Lincecum was famous for his hair.  Why not tie a doll giveaway to hair?   To receive one of the six dolls with special hair would be a major win.  Tim Lincecum dolls with hair were instant collectibles.

To make sure the fans knew about the Timmy doll giveaway the Giant's PR machine tweeted an announcement on March 31st that the bobbleheads would include "real hair".  After a frenzy ensued, The Club admitted the tweet was an April Fool's Day hoax.

The Tim Lincecum bobblehead giveaway triggered the thought that The Giants should partner with a toy company in order to create a signature Tim Lincecum doll.

As you might expect, the Tim Lincecum Bobbleheads given away in 2010 are now fetching a new price on the various auction sites.   Tim Lincecum Bobbleheads were also made available in 2012 after the San Francisco Giants won The World's Series.

Meanwhile the big question is whether or not the famous pitcher will keep his tresses short or let them grow back out.  Only time will tell.
