Ben & Jerry's Schweddy Balls Selling Well Despite Boycott

Ben & Jerry's Schweddy Balls

Ben & Jerry's Schweddy Balls ice cream is Missing In Action in action since it was first announced.  Supporters and members of the One Million Moms group appears to be having an impact on the new ice cream flavor.

That Mississippi-based moms organization has been putting the heat on retailers to keep Schweddy Balls out of their freezers and encouraging parents to ask the Vermont-based Ben & Jerry's to stop production of the item, saying the name is nothing but locker room humor which is not appropriate for young children.

The flavor which features fudge-covered rum balls was named after an inneundo-ripe skit featuring actor Alec Baldwin as baker Pete Schweddy in 1998 on a now-famous Saturday Night Live skit.  In the skit Baldwin promises "No one can resist my Schweddy balls."

Stores chains not wishing to risk coming under fire by the boycotting groups are not stocking the limited edition flavor.   The store chains are keeping mum about their decision not to carry the flavor.  They're not saying if their decision is based upon One Million Moms but many believe the group has had a definite impact on the Ben & Jerry's controversial ice cream flavor.Ben & Jerry's spokesman Sean Greenwood said Thursday that Schweddy Balls has quickly become the most popular limited-edition flavor the company has produced.

Greenwood said about one-third of the retailers that carry its other products are offering Schweddy Balls, about the same as any other specialty flavor it has produced — though this one has outpaced those in sales at the stores and the company's "Scoop Shops."

Could it be because it is a flavor ripe with controversy?  Or maybe it's those yummy fudge-covered rum balls are making the flavor a best seller for Ben & Jerry's.
