Emmy Rossum Was Chubby And Bullied On Her Way To Stardom

Today I was digging through one of my infamous white boxes holding up one side of my wall of boxes.  Stuffed inside are stacks of my clippings and notes.  I promised myself today I was going to write a blog about the first piece of paper my fingers touched when I popped the top.

Emmanuelle Rossum's Clippings Emerge

Ironically my first discovery was a slightly yellow clipping with my hand written scribbles about New York born beauty Emmy Rossum (Emmanuelle Grey "Emmy" Rossum)  who became an overnight sensation after her performance as Christine in the big screen version of Phantom of the Opera six years ago.

Although Emmy (born September 12, 1986) is known for her lush chocolate brown tresses, she is also known for her disappearing act after Phantom and a follow-up role in Poseidon.  She actually went MIA while recording a CD which was released in 2007.  It was her debut album, Inside Out.   She also released a Christmas EP the same year entitled Carol of the Bells.

She first starred in a string of movies including Songcatcher (2000), An American Rhapsody (2001) and Passionada (2002). Her role in Mystic River (2003) garnered her wider fame. She then starred in the blockbuster film The Day After Tomorrow (2004) and The Phantom of the Opera (2004) for which she was nominated for a Golden Globe. She has since starred in Poseidon (2006), Dragonball: Evolution (2009) and Dare (2009).

Not A Life Of Priviledge

Although you might think Emmy has had a life of privilege because of her attendance at the posh New York Spence school where Gwyneth Paltrow attended.

The reality is that Emmy admits to having it pretty hard growing up as a result of her father leaving her mother before her birth.  In order to make it possible for her daughter to rub elbows with the other rich young ladies at Spence Rossum's mom "worked so many jobs to put me through."

The actresses and songbird admits she "didn't fit in" because while she was "good at science and math" she just wasn't into boys which apparently was important at the all girls school.

Although Emmy has been successful so far she admits at times she still feels like "the chubby girl at school who wasn't cool" and had "horrible yearbook photos."

Shameless

In December 2009, Rossum joined the cast of the Showtime drama series pilot Shameless, based on the hit British series of the same name. The pilot costars William H. Macy, Allison Janney and Justin Chatwin.

In April 2010, Showtime announced that they would be picking up the series for a full season of twelve episodes with production scheduled to begin in late summer 2010.

Emmy has proclaimed she's happy with her life now and never regrets anything she does, including a Jay Leno performance of Christina Aguilera's Dirrty.

Obviously even at such a young age Emmy has focus and direction about where she wants to go with her career and is definitely following her dreams.
