What is DHT?

DHT (dihydrotestosterone), a male hormone, is believed by medical researchers to be one of the major causes of hair loss in adults, both male and female.

Medical researchers have found that men with male pattern baldness generally have increased levels of DHT in the scalp. It is generally believed that this increased level of DHT shortens the hair’s normal growth cycle resulting in thinning hair.

DHT is derived from testosterone by a complex chemical process using Type I and Type II, 5-alpha reductase isoenzymes. The Type I enzyme in particular is prominent in the scalp and sebaceous glands. As the hair loss cycle continues (and possibly accelerates) there is typically an increase in the sebum produced by the sebaceous gland attached to the hair follicle. The increased production of sebum is accompanied by an increase in the level of 5-alpha reductase and pore clogging which can cause damage to the hair root and scalp.

Blocking the formation of DHT and Reducing DHT level in the scalp is needed in order to prevent and slow down the rate of hair loss.

Several studies have shown that Azeleic Acid, Zinc Sulfate and Saw Palmetto Extracts block the formation of DHT in the scalp.

Daily Hair Tip
To combat cowlicks apply pomade or setting gel to the spot & blow dry w/ nozzle aimed downwards. Longer hair helps weigh down cowlicks as will tiny barrettes or clips. Pulling hair into a ponytail or braids will tighten down the cowlick. Experiment until you get results.
