Fall Hair Color Hues

When the heat of summer softens into Fall so does the popularity of rich hair colors, highlights and lowlights.

In general, professional hair colorists like to transition their color clients into shades which may include descriptions such as light caramel, soft toffee, coffee, mocha, chocolate, cocoa, cinnamon, tawny brown, rosy brown or spice.

Adopting Fall appropriate hair colors can be approached from a gradual approach starting first with subtle lowlights which can then be extended into larger sections of the hair or migrated into the base.

Hair colorists recognize the value of incorporating a range of hair lowlights for creating instant beauty, depth, shine and amping up the natural texture of the existing base hue.

Hair lowlights can has as much impact as full blown base colors. This is especially true for brunettes and redheads.

Lowlights also offer the advantage of changing the hair's look without a dramatic difference.

Some famous celebrities who understand the value of transitioning from summer lightness to more sultry lowlights and softer Fall hues include, but is not limited to the following:

Transitioning To Fall Hair Color Hues At Home

Whenever possible it's best to work with your professional hair colorist to create any new color designs for your hair.

If budgetary constraints make working with a professional hair colorist challenging, you can transition your hair to Fall hair colors at home by doing your research.

Lorri Goddard-Clark is a celebrated LA hair colorist with a dizzying array of celebrity clients including Jennifer Aniston, Reese Witherpoon and Scarlett Johansson, to name a few.

Goddard-Clark also wrote The Hair Color Mix Book: More Than 150 Recipes for Salon-Perfect Color At Home. to help hair consumers who are unable to access a professional hair colorist to pick and create the most flattering hair color at home.

When To Do At-Home Lowlights Rather Than Going To The Salon

One of the key topics Goddard-Clark covers in her popular hair color book is when to do at-home lowlights and when to go to the salon.

Goddard-Clark suggests hair consumers follow a basic rule of thumb. If you want subtle lowlights which easily blend with your natural hair color, a DIY kit should work fine.

However, if you want lowlights which are two or three shades darker than your natural hair color, see a salon professional. If you have light brown hair and want to go one shade darker, creating the lowlights at home is definitely doable.

Another rule of thumb for at-home hair coloring is to never go more than two shades lighter or darker that your natural hair color. This guarantees you'll enhance rather than detract from your natural eye and skin tone giving you a washed away look.

Hair Color Trend Forecasts For Fall?

No matter what the Season, blonde hues ranging from sun-kissed highlights to one-process platinum blonde will be in. However, some blondes may wish to incorporate a range of darker lowlights to transition from Summer blonde to a softer Fall blonde.

All colors ranging from blonde, brunette and redhead will continue to follow a path of darker goldens, richer red, deeper browns and glistening blacks. Retro 80 colors including pink, blue and green will continue to show up as accent hues.

Home Hair Color Secret Tip

Goddard-Clark recommends adding a teaspoon of olive oil to the highlight or lowlight bleach of your choice. The celebrity hair colorist does this in her salon because it produces a smoother color consistency, but won't impact the performance of the hair color product.

When In Doubt Have A Glaze

Hair color experts often recommend hair glosses and glazes to extend the life of any hair color from lowlights to highlights.

First, choose hair color the same shade as yours—if you have dark auburn hair, choose dark auburn hair color. Next, shampoo your hair, towel-blot, and detangle.

Take the developer bottle and pour out half of the developer, adding water in its place; this allows the color to become a standard deposit-only gloss. Mix the color and distribute through your hair. Leave the mixture on for three minutes then rinse, shampoo, and condition for a gorgeous, shiny finish.
