Introduction

Charlize Theron "Sleepwalking" Los Angeles Premiere 03-06-08

If you go back in time to the very beginning of the stellar career of Academy Award winning Charlize Theron (Charlie to her friends) you would be amazed at how much her hairstyles have evolved throughout time.

In the April 1999 issue of InStyle Magazine, the lovely Charlize appeared on the cover coiffed into a short sassy bob with a sweep of spectacular bangs angled across her forehead from a deep side part.

Her color was a magnificent shade of freshly churned butter with hints of lowlights and highlights. Her cover look was created by hair maestro Kevin Mancuso.

One of favorite films growing up in a small South African village with a pet goat was Splash with Tom Hanks.

The superstar admitted she was jealous of the blonde mermaid played by Daryl Hannah and when she had the chance, Charlize would recreate the role in a pond near her home.

Most recently the 5'10" Charlize appeared at the Sleepwalking Premiere in Los Angeles with the latest hair look for Spring 2008.

Charlize, who has a classic dancer's carriage, is tall and slender. She could easily carry off the tousled waves she wore.

Her medium length hair was twisted and tousled into a lush veil of soft waves that framed her gorgeous oval/heart shaped face.

The color was a stunning creation of cookies and cream highlights and lowlights with spectacular shine. One side of her hair was directed down and swept along one eyebrow.

Charlize' tousled hair waves were precision placed to add dimension to the beautiful actress' stunning cheekbones.

Besides being a gorgeous 5'8" blonde goddess who spent her teen years modeling in Milan, Italy, Charlize has beautiful skin, eyes and hair which she wears in a variety of spectacular styles ranging from softly waved to tightly curled.

Charlize is a classic beauty willing to experiment with a wide range of looks including soft messy hair twists like the one she rocked at the In The Valley of Elah Premiere in Los Angeles.

Charlize, who works with some of the very best celebrity haircolorists and hairdressers in the world, wore a messy center part that extended on either side into softly waved face framing panels with a few loose strands allow to softly cascade down around her neck.

Note: Charlize gets her stunning haircolor done at the Laurent D salon - Prive in Los Angeles. Laurent is a big fan and has expressed admiration for her ever evolving hairstyles.

The actress' honey blonde tresses were highlighted with interlaced ribbons of platinum blonde and beautiful gold.

Each side of the face framing hair panels were softly pulled back towards the back of the head at the nape of the neck and twisted into a softly tousled hair twist.

A few loose strands were pulled out from the twist and allowed to seductively nestle against Charlie's long elegant neck.

Charlize Goes From Blonde To Chocolate - 2007

Charlize does not feel pressured to have a particular look, hairstyle or hair color.

She proved the point in 2007 when she transitioned into a chocolate hair hue phase.

Throught 2007 her base color alternated between a milk chocolate at the ASC21st Annual Oustanding Achievement Awards and a deeper caramel chocolate swirl at the Reaping Premiere.

Her version of chocolate she showcased at The Reaping Premiere, consisted of a few lighter blonde highlights which were subtlety interwoven through.

At the ACS Awards Charlize wore her straight tresses with a side part which directed a front sweep of hair across one corner of her forehead.

Tiny ribbons of blonde highlights and chocolate lowlights were interlaced throughout her crown and face line areas.

At the Reaping Premiere Charlize wore her medium length hair with waves and curls cascading from a center part with a curtain of soft strands nestling into her face along the edges of her eyebrow.

In January of 2006 Charlize wore her shimmering blonde highlighted tresses softly pulled back off her face into a sensual nape ponytwist with ribbons of soft undulated waves extending from the front of her hairline towards the back of her neck.

Simple but elegant, her ponytwist cascaded from a full lush crown with individual panels of hair slightly lifted from the scalp to create delicious definition.

Charlize Theron Grand Opening of Social Hollywood 06-27-06

In June of 2006 Charlize rocked a similarly textured hairstyle to the Grand Opening of Social Hollywood.

Her spectacular hairstyle could best be classified as a Retro style Bob with some discreet layering.

The Retro style Bob included a side part with a few select waved strands pulled down and across her forehead.

The forehead sweep drew attention to Charlie's gorgeous eyes and lips. A few delicate strands nestled into her cheeks highlighting her stunning cheekbones. She radiated hard core old- time glamour.

Charlize told InStyle Magazine back in 1999 "I think old-time glamour will never go away and I'm glad about that".

Charlize can look spectacular in just about any hairstyle from long to short, blonde to brunette, worn down or up.

Proving this point, the actress embraced a layered updo at the 11th Annual Critics' Choice Award.

Her hair was swept completely off her face into a full pompadour style with carefully separated ribbons of hair laying across the top showing off gorgeous vanilla highlights and caramel lowlights.

This intricately coiffed updo hairstyle has sleek sides which support the brushed back crown and top.

All of the individual sections flow gently together and connect at the back of the crown where the strands are twisted into a beautiful cascading twist.

Visually stunning, Charlie's updo works on every level. The hairdo's height was well balanced, neither too high or too flat. The updo style showcased her gorgeous face drawing attention to her beautiful eyes and lips.

Although her updo looks easy to recreate, keep in mind that Charlize has some of the best celebrity hairstylists on her speed dial from Kevin Mancuso and Campbell McAuley to Enzio

Charlize who obviously had the help of a celebrity hairdresser, showcased a gorgeous tousled hairstyle. It was a work of hair art.

Although the style that Charlize wore in March of 2008 works perfectly with the latest trend for lots of lush waves, Charlize has worn this particular style off and on during her career. It was a style she favored in 2005 and 2006 as well.

Charlize appears to return to the similar hairstyle because it works fabulously with her slightly heart shaped face, naturally wavy hair and medium length strands.

As I have mentioned before in my blog, getting a tight definition of medium length hair can be difficult because hair consumers and hair professionals might not agree.

What I have suggested is that medium length hair, in most cases, would be defined as extending from the roots to the end of the earlobe or conversely extending from the roots to the chin or slightly below.

The key difference between medium hair styles and long hairstyles is that the long hairstyles extend from the roots to the top of the shoulders or slightly below.

With this medium length hairstyle definition in mind would Charlize's hair be defined as medium length or long? Honestly, it could go either way. However, when her hair is stick straight and not curled into the tousled style she wore in LA, it would probably touch her shoulders, which would then be defined as long.

Shampoo products to try: Phyto - Phytojoba Hydrating Shampoo, PHYTO - Dry Hair System, Phyto - PhytoBrush Shampoo.

If you have baby fine or thin hair and wish to build in the same lush movement and volume that Charlize has, use a volume enhancing shampoo.

Skip any rinse-out conditioning products that might make hair too soft and flat. If you must use a rinse-out conditioner, make sure that you limit how much you use and that you concentrate on the middle to the ends. Rinse well with a cool water spray which helps build natural volume and increases shine.

Step 2: Towel blot strands. Do not rub wet hair which is more fragile and can break. Detangle strands from the ends to the roots.

Step 3: Apply your favorite mousse or texture defining cream and/or defrizzing balm. Distribute from the top of the ears to the ends. Distribute well. If you prefer, create a mix that combines the mousse or cream with the defrisant and/or leave-in. This is known as cocktailing in the hair trade.

If your hair is fine or thin, apply a volumizing gel or similar products to the roots to get lots of body and movement.

To protect against heat and add body, distribute a leave-in conditioner, mousse or gel from the top of the ears to the ends. Distribute well.

Step 4: Separate towel blotted strands into 2" sections. Working from side to side, allow strands to nestle into the basin of a long finger diffuser allowing air flow to move through the strands evenly.

Step 5: Once hair is completely dry, separate into 3" sections. Spray each individual section with a good setting spray or hairspray. Use fingers and twist hair clockwise into a tight sausage formation. Pin against the scalp. Spritz again with styling spray. Repeat around the entire head until all hair is twisted and pinned.

Step 6: Allow newly formed twists to air dry or if you're in a hurry, sit under a hard hood or soft hood dryer until hair is dry.

Step 7: When hair is completely dry, remove each pinned twist section one at a time. Use fingers to lightly pick each section and tousle. Do not use a brush or comb which may flatten the newly formed twisted sections.

Step 8: To get a tighter tousle, use a medium barrel curling iron to curl random sections. Allow newly curled section to cool and arrange the finished style.

Step 9: Spray the finished style with a good holding hairspray.
