EW.com Reveals Reasons For House Death Scenes

If you love House on Fox and watched the latest episode on 4/6/09 you were probably shocked. If you have not yet watched the episode and hate spoilers you need to stop reading this blog because I might ruin it for you.

I have to admit my mouth was hanging open throughout most of the show.  I shocked on a number of levels.  Besides the fact that Dr. Kutner's death occurred out of nowhere, I had not seen it leaked before the show.  I did not see it coming and could not believe it.  I was in denial just like House and the rest of the cast.

Yes, there was comments about a future episode of House being shocking but never in my wildest dreams did I believe Dr. Kutner would commit suicide.

EW.com Reports Kal Penn Has Left House For Good

According to EW.com "Kal Penn, Dr. Kutner, has left the show for good."  Not only, according to EW.com did Kal ask to leave House, but he also is leaving acting.  EW.com reported, after talking to Kal about his decision to leave House that the young actor is leaving House to go work at the White House.

According to Penn "I got to know the President and some of the staff during the campaign and had expressed interest in working there, so I'm going to be the associate director in the White House office of public liaison."

Luckily for Penn, as reported by EW.com, he was able to explain to the powers to be at House why he wanted to leave and take a break from acting.  They were able to come up with a plan so Kal Penn could leave House and his death could propel the plot into new directions.

Certainly the sudden and shocking death of Dr. Kutner will drive many of the characters in brand new directions.  There is no doubt about that.  It also will help the ratings, not that House ever needs much help.  In a way, the suicide of Dr. Kutner was a brilliant decision.

So how did Kal Penn feel about his sudden death on the show?  He told EW.com "one of the things I love about our show is you never know what's going to happen. So that news struck me in the same way we hope it strikes the audience: there was a little bit of anger and some depression. You really go through those emotions, especially when somebody dies in that fashion. Ultimately, it was a really interesting choice for them to make. We don't really know why he did it, unless it's resolved in the episodes after [I left], which, of course, I'm not privy to anymore. At least in [last night's] episode, we don't really know why he did it. There's no note. There's no explanation. And as a testament to David and Katie, that's a huge risk. 'Cause it is going to make people upset, and it is going to piss off some of the audience. And, ultimately, in my opinion, that's what art really is -- when you can conjure up those kinds of emotions. And it's rare nowadays to be able to do that on network television, but they managed to."

I couldn't have said it any better myself.

Good luck to Kal Penn on his future noble quest to serve the public in his new role working for the Obama White House.
