The majority of people want to know how to grow their hair faster, make their current hair fuller or prevent hair loss.

Ironically, some people, primarily women, have major issues with too much hair.

Not only on their face and body, but sometimes on their ears, head and body.

Hirsutism

Excessive hair growth is formally known as hirsutism (HUR-soot-iz-um).  The condition, when it occurs, should always be reported to your primary physician for evaluation and diagnostic testing.

In other cases there can be excess hair growth due to abnormally high levels of male hormones.

All women normally produce some male hormones.  However, if you produce too much excessive hair growth may occur.

Sometimes excessive hair growth is hereditary, but sometimes it can be directly linked to polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS).

Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome

PCOS occurs when the ovaries produce too much androgen.  As a result, the ovaries develop cysts, which interfere with the normal menstrual cycle.

Excessive hair growth often occurs with PCOS.    In addition, PCOS is sometimes linked with insulin resistance which may result in obesity and imbalanced sex hormones.

Turkish Researchers Have Tested Dried Spearmint Leaves For Excessive Hair Growth

In 2007 Turkish researchers published results of a study involving excessive hair growth.  The study was published online February 20, 2007 in Phytotherapy Research

Researchers formulated the tea with 1 cup of boiling water poured over 1 heaping teaspoon of dried spearmint leaves and allowed to brew for 5 to 10 minutes.

The researchers determined that drinking spearmint might tea may help anyone struggled with abnormal or excessive hair growth.

Female tea drinkers had a measurable decrease in the type of testosterone occurring in their bloodstream.

Historically, physicians have treated excessive hair growth in women, with oral contraceptives or spironalactone, a drug which sometimes causes unpleasant side effects.

Ultimately the Turkish researchers concluded that spearmint tea can be a non-prescription alternative for mild cases of too much hair growth.  Spearmint tea may not work as well for all cases of excessive hair growth.

The Turkish researchers decided further study must measure the full effect of spearmint tea on excessive hair growth.

Summary - Issues With Too Much Hair

Does drinking 2 cups of spearmint tea help minimize excessive hair growth, known as hirsutism?  The reports vary according to a number of factors.

In general spearmint tea does appear to help to decrease testosterone in the bloodstream.  However, it may or may not reduce hair growth.

There can be other causes of issues with too much hair including medical issues, which need to be addressed by a medical professional.

Daily Hair Tip
For a low maintenance style, try to work with your natural hair type rather than against it. For example, if your hair is naturally wavy, select a hairstyle that works easily with the waves.
