Hairstylists Set New A Guinness World Record

What happens when you gather 552 licensed cosmetologists in the same location armed with scissors, clippers and 552 hair models?  The hairstylists set a new Guinness Word Record.

The record setting group of hairstylists crowded inside of the Mid-America Center in Council Bluffs, Iowa on April 10, 2010 to use their hair cutting skills to set a new record in the famous record book.

Hair Professionals From All Across The Midwest

Hair professionals from all the states across the Midwest crowded inside of the Mid-America Center in Council Bluffs, IA, to set a new Guinness World Record for the most people cutting hair simultaneously.

Stylists from Iowa, Nebraska, Minnesota and South Dakota traveled long distances in order to attend the event.

As part of Peel's Salon Service annual spring trade show,the "World's Largest Hands-On Workshop" required each participating stylists to do a full 15 minutes of non-stop hair cutting along with all the other stylists.

The goal was met and the attempt to set a new Guinness World Record was a huge success.

Linda Melia, vice president of Peels was interviewed about the Guinness record setting event.  She said “we thought we’d try to do something fun and different” as part of the trade show.

Hairstylists were thrilled when they heard of the opportunity to be part of the records books.  The list to participate in the group hair cutting challenge soon filled up and a waiting list was started.

Some stylists were very anxious to be part of the event and waited in anticipation for others to fall off the original sign up list.

More Than 6,000 Hair Professionals

Melia confirmed that the Mid-America Center was consulted to determine how many people would be allowed to participate based on MAC's accommodations.

More than 6,000 hair professionals plus 250 vendors displaying hair care, salon and beauty products gathered for the trade show.  World-renowned stylist, Phillip Wilson, one of the most influential hairstylists in the past 100 years, also participated in the event.

Previous Guinness World Record For Most Hairstylists Cutting Hair Simultaneously

The previous Guinness World record was 250 stylists and 250 heads.  Melia said Peel’s started off hoping to just beat the current record, but had such an overwhelming amount of interest from attendees, they soon realized they could take it all the way and smash the record.

When the time clock ran out and the participating stylists knew they had broken the record, a loud cheer rang through the Mid-America Center.  Everyone who participated was thrilled that they were part of the historic event.

Guinness adjudicator Mike Janela was flown in from New York City to verify the record.  “It’s really rewarding to see people achieve their dreams,” Janela said. “They pulled it off.”
