US Senator Frank Lautenberg Cancer Related Hair Loss

US Senator Frank Lautenberg a Democrat from New Jersey recently returned to Washington, D.C. and The Senate after battling cancer.

Lautenberg is New Jersey’s longest-serving senator.   He told the media he feels good and strong.

After enduring a round of chemotherapy injected into his blood for five hours every three weeks the 86 year old politican lost his trademark head of thick white hair.

In fact, Lautenberg returned to the Senate with a bald head from the cancer treatments.  The distinctly senatorial mane of white hair is gone.  "I didn’t realize how much hair I had until I saw it clog the shower drain," he says.

"The hair will grow back,’’ he noted.   A rare personal observation, but almost required because several staffers shaved their heads in solidarity.   He faces three more chemo sessions.

He has, since his return from his February hospitalization and diagnosis of lymphoma, tried to project power and health.

Lautenberg won’t say how he felt when an ambulance rushed him to Mt. Sinai Hospital on a cold February night or when oncologist James Holland told him he had cancer, an illness that killed his father at 43. "Personal thoughts," he says.
