Jessica Simpson Doesn't Accept John Mayer's Apology

Oprah introduced Jessica Simpson by saying "Jessica Simpson is ready to go public."  Oprah pointed out that Jessica "has been picked apart publicly for her relationships, or lack of relationships. For wearing what some people call unflattering clothes, for gaining 10 pounds and recently she has had her intimate sexual history splashed across magazines and the Internet for everybody to see.  That has been Jessica Simpson's experience."

Oprah showed a tape which she narrated.  She said "it seems every move Jessica Simpson makes become fodder for sensational and downright nasty headlines.  Her bust size, hair color, weight, outfits.  Last year these photos (of Jessica in the mom jeans) created a media frenzy calling Jessica fat in her in her so called mom jeans.  The paparazzi follows her everywhere.

Especially when she's dating someone famous.  During her year and a half romance with Dallas Cowboys Quarterback (her nickname was Yoko Romo) the press was relentless.  Jessica was blamed every time Tony (the Jessica Jinx) had a bad game."

Oprah continued "Now another one of Jessica's ex's is creating bad press.  Singer John Mayer gave a Kiss and Tell interview to Playboy Magazine comparing sex with Jessica to crack cocaine Jessica says that all of that just about destroyed her and she hasn't been ready to speak out publicly until now."

At this point Jessica entered the stage wearing a knee length black dress and a blush pink jacket with matching heels.   Her trademark hair was worn long and in lush waves.

Oprah pointed out that it was "five years it's been" since Jessica was last on Oprah's show.  Jessica agreed "five years, yes".  Oprah "five years since you've been here."  Jessica "I know, time flies."  Oprah asked "how are you?"  Jessica said "I'm doing very good, very good.  Yes."

Oprah "so all of the tabloid, paparazzi craziness..I'm sure in the beginning everybody tries to ignore it.  But when it become overwhelming and you're on the cover of practically every magazine and everywhere you go you're hunted like a dog, it's gotta get to you."

Jessica "I can't say I've allowed myself to ignore it.  Cause it's everywhere.  So, those voices are sometimes in my head when I fall asleep.  You  know.  It's hard.  Just the voices of the judgment of people."

Her lowest point during the past couple of years?  Jessica "probably the mom's jean situation, people talking about my weight for an entire year.  People just couldn't stop talking about my weight fluctuating."  Oprah commented on the famous photo and said "this is how out of it I was because I looked at it and said 'I really like that belt'."

Jessica laughed.  "Well I was performing at a chili cook off.  And that makes the headline even more extravagant.  Well I actually did eat a big old corn dog before."  Jessica laughed.

Oprah asked "does the conversation about your weight, does it bother you?"  Jessica "of course it does, it would bother any woman, I would think.  The fact that I was famous last year for gaining 10 pounds is ridiculous.  And it's really sad."

Oprah "and so when we first saw you, you had invited cameras inside your marriage, really, to Nick.  And that's how we first came to realize that you were Jessica Simpson.  Do you think in some way you signed up for this?  Or did you know what you were signing up for?"

Jessica "I didn't know what I was signing up for.  But I do think that I opened myself up to the world of judgment and of people's opinions.  In a lot of ways it is my fault.  And I shouldn't expect people not to."

Oprah "I wouln't say fault, I would say responsibility, it's you."  Jessica "well yeah."  Oprah "you own it." Jessica "I just didn't know it would end up being so harsh."

Oprah told Jessica she would be at the airport and see Jessica's photo on "all the covers of all the major magazines, week after week after week after week after week.  And what I thought.  What I think when I see that is 'gee, there's an entire industry making money week after week after week on you."  Oprah pointed out that although some people think the shots are posed, they are actually paparazzi shots."

Jessica "uh huh.  Yeah, the sad part about it is, when everything came out.  I didn't want to say anything about.  I didn't want to sit down and talk with anybody about it.  Because I felt guilty.  I felt like if people look at me and maybe they're a size bigger they look at themselves and they think they're fat because of what the tabloids and media are saying.  And it's just wrong."

Oprah said "so you didn't want to say anything because you felt that it might make other people who were bigger or people who were your size....."

Jessica "I didn't want to feed into it.  I didn't want to let people know that it was affecting me."  Oprah "are you comfortable with the weight you are now?"

Jessica "Absolutely.  I love my curves.  I'm not ever going to be a size zero and I don't want to weigh 90 pounds." Oprah "well you did for 'Dukes Of Hazzard'."

Jessica laughed "I didn't weight 90 pounds. But I was definitely smaller.  But that was Daisy Duke.  That's a role.  I was playing a role.  I don't want to look like Daisy Duke everyday.  I don't want to wear a bathing suit every day.  Nope."

Oprah "Do you feel the pressure of every time you go out and if you eat a corn dog or if you are out in public and you chose to be at a restaurant do you feel like people are watching you?"

Oprah pointed out that in Allure Magazine Jessica was quoted as saying "it's always shocking when people come up and say 'you're not fat' at the airport.

Jessica "They just did it to me yesterday at the airport and I went through security and I had to get a pat down and the woman's like 'oh, you're not really that big.' And I'm like 'thanks.  That's really kind.  Thanks.' You know it's like people think.  You think to yourself when I walk away from a moment like that.  I'm thinking 'wow people really think I'm like 245 pounds.'  You know, it's really a hard thing for me to talk about because I celebrate woman of all sizes.  And I think we're all beautiful.  I do.  I do believe that."

Oprah "we thank you for that."  Jessica "I do believe that it is something that comes from within us and something you have to find within yourself and be comfortable with yourself."

Oprah "I also understand that John Mayer, your former boyfriend, did an interview with Playboy Magazine and in that magazine he said some thing about you like having sex with you was like being on crack cocaine."

Jessica "Yeah, I couldn't read the article.  I heard about it.  And I saw some of the clips and stuff.  I tried to read the article and I was, I was so disappointed at him and it made me so sad.  And it was really discouraging because that's not the John that I knew."  Jessica took a deep breath as if she was going to tear up.

Oprah asked how long they dated and Jessica said "we dated on and off for two years."  Oprah said "there's nothing worse in being disappointed in somebody.  So, you're not angry? Or are you?"  Jessica said "I'm not angry.  I'm not angry, I'm....well I'm a little bit angry."

Oprah said "okay, okay" and Jessica laughed.  She said "I'm a little bit angry.:  Oprah asked why Jess was angry and she said "Well I don't want people knowing what I'm like in bed.  I mean, I guess it could've been a lot worse."  She joked "My phone is ringing off the hook, I want to say."  She explained "it's so intimate".

Oprah said she understood Jessica's anger because "there's a code between people who have shared intimacies."

Oprah "did you feel betrayed?"  Jessica "absolutely I felt betrayed.  I hope he gets his life together and I'll be praying (for him)."   Oprah "did he apologize to you?"  Jessica "he did apologize to me but I didn't"  Oprah "did he call you up and apologize?'  Jessica "I haven't written back.  I don't accept it. It's just kinda one of those things I'm not going to, I don't resent him.  I'm just going to let that go and that part of my life is over."

Oprah repeated "let that go."  She asked Jessica "who do you have to turn to when you're feeling really sort of taken on by the world?"

Jessica said "I have an incredible family.  They are my backbone.  And then I have my best friends that I surround myself with.  Ken Paves."  The cameras flashed to Ken sitting in the audience.  Oprah said "yeah, hairdressers know everything."  Jessica agreed  "hairdressers know everything.  No, I have incredible friends and family."

Note: "The Price Of Beauty" premieres on VH1 on March 15th."

Daily Hair Tip
In a Clairol Professional survey 33% of the respondents reported that they preferred to have their hair colored in a salon rather than risk doing damage at home. 50% of the participants said they liked their colorists best because of friendliness while only 38% valued good advice about haircolor or the fact that the colorist kept up on the latest trends.
