Why Lightening Your Hair With Lemon Juice Doesn't Really Work

Lady GaGa 2009

One of the most common pieces of misinformation about hair color that persists to date is that it's possible to color your hair with lemon juice and a long day in the sun.

While it may be possible to get some very subtle highlights to already blonde or light brown hair, lemon juice will not turn medium or dark hair blonde.

In fact, if lemon juice does manage to impact brunette strands in any way it may add an undesirable red or other tint.

Why? To go from a brunette shade to a blonde shade requires lifting the current darker shade.

Lemon juice does not have the chemical oomp or other properties necessary to lighten brunette hair to a blonde shade.

Even more troubling is the fact that applying lemon juice and sitting in the sun can actually cause damage to the hair by drying it out.

It can also potentially cause sunburn to delicate scalps.

Finally, lemon juice can be harsh and drying for already chemically damaged, dry or coarse strands. Don't buy into the old wives tale about lemon juice.

Of course if you want to try applying lemon juice to your strands there's no reason not to. But keep in mind it's extremely unlikely your hair will lighten in any way.

It's also virtually unlikely your will start as a brunette and end up as a golden or platinum blonde.

If you want to go extremely light and are considering lemon juice because of a tight budget, consider other options which will give you the results you desire.

One option is to visit a local cosmetology school for a very cost effective highlighting or similar color treatment.

You may also wish to check to see if any of your local salons offer a training night which requires the use of models.

Or you can also sign up for a hair color training night, making sure you can go blonde during the training. Some training night models don't offer volunteer models the option to select how their hair will be cut, colored or styled.

Another option includes searching on Craig's List to find opportunities to serve as a volunteer model for cosmetology students taking their state boards or for their cosmetology class projects.

Keep in mind cosmetology students working on projects at their school will be supervised by a teach who is a licensed hairstylist. Cosmetology students requiring models for their boards are not supervised by teachers or senior stylist.

In the vast majority of cases the use of lemon juice and the sun will not lighten hair. The idea that lemon juice can light hair is basically false.

If you want to lighten your dark blonde or brunette hued tresses to a lighter blonde shade, skip the lemon juice and reach for a chemical based hair color product that will provide the results you desire.

Aspirin can give your hair a pain. Since it's eliminated by your body through youre hair follicles & regular aspirin use can build up in tresses leaving them dull & crunchy. Use clarifying shampoo and/or reconstructor 2x per month to eliminate aspirin deposits & strengthen hair & add shine.
