Term: Finger Picking

A procedure where the fingers are used to detangle and pick the hair. When free of cuts or abrasions, most fingers are much softer then plastic or metal picks. Some hair care experts believe finger picking is the absolute safest way to detangle wet hair without pulling or damaging the strands. Some people will apply a leave-in conditioner or detangling product to the fingers before finger picking. Finger picking can also be used on dry hair and works well when arranging curls or natural waves. Not everyone feels comfortable using their fingers in place of a pick or comb but it does offer the option to protect delicate strands from ripping, tearing or tangling.

Daily Hair Tip
In a Clairol Professional survey 33% of the respondents reported that they preferred to have their hair colored in a salon rather than risk doing damage at home. 50% of the participants said they liked their colorists best because of friendliness while only 38% valued good advice about haircolor or the fact that the colorist kept up on the latest trends.
