Term: Biopiracy

Biopiracy is a situation where indigenous knowledge of nature, originating with indigenous people is used by others such as individuals and/or corporations to develop a wide range of products, including beauty, hair, make-up, dietary aids and prescriptions, etc., for profit, without benefit to the indigenous people. The white Rosy Periwinkle is a classic example of biopiracy being utilizied for the profit of large corporations w/out benefit of the indigenous populations knowledgeable about its benefits. India is a country very protective of it's natural resources such as Neem which has been used in an array of hair and beauty products by large corporations for profit.
