A Second Look

Was it Aristotle or possibly John, the guy that sat at my lunch table in 5th grade, that said, "You snooze, you lose."  In any case, it applies to my quest to find a picture of the LIV TYLER as a redhead.  Don't despair, however, as the news isn't all bad.  The reason that my quest is now moot is that Liv has returned to the brunette fold, as you can see in this recent picture.  Not only that, but those of you charting the growth progress at home will notice that Liv's lovely locks (a little something for you alliteration fans) have legitimately reached shoulder-length.  And there was much rejoicing.

Remember somewhere around February or March of this year, I reported that ALANIS MORRISETTE said that she was planning to cut her hair and panicked everybody?  Trust me, there was some panic.  Also, a bit of alarm.  Even possibly a smidgen of dismay.  Anyway, I later attempted to calm the hysteria once I discovered that what she meant (and did) was cut off about a foot to bring it from tush-length to waist-length.  I never had a good picture of it, however, until Alanis showed up at the premiere of "Dogma" in which she portrays...uh...well...God.  No, really, she does.  And you have to admit, she has about the best hair of anyone who's played a deity in a while.

When reporting on the fact that Jane Leeves was growing her hair again, I mentioned that her "Frasier" costar, PERI GILPIN, was doing the same.  Finally found a photo that shows Peri's lengthening locks.  I'm not sure if she's attempting to once again cultivate the luxuriant mane she had in the first couple of seasons of the show or she and Jane just decided that it was time to grow their hair after they decided to cut it last year.  And before you ask, no, I don't know for sure that they use the same buddy system women employ in going to public restrooms to go to the hairstylist, but there is a getting to be a weird parallel, isn't there?

Found a terrific photo of FAITH HILL's fabulous extensions (and if you still have any doubts that they are extensions, the photo to the right is from May of 1999).  I have to say, of all the actresses and/or singers currently wearing them out there, Faith's blonde waves (which I've also seen her wear straight just as attractively) are about the most natural and beautiful that I've seen.  Wow, that's a lot of gushing in one paragraph.  I think I may have pulled something.

Finally, before getting to Snippets, I have to once again revisit LAUREN HOLLY.  After my initial praise of her long blonde locks, I received several letters saying that I missed the boat on this one (which you can read in last month's column).  The criticisms ranged from saying that it was too blonde to it makes her look like "mutton dressed as lamb" (yeah, I'm still working on that one myself).  So, having been taken to task, I went back to reevaluate my initial impression.  Well, as they say in the NFL, after further review, the call on the field stands.

Not only do I stand by my original assessment, I'm even more convinced that is looks terrific.  I offer as evidence a picture made when Lauren attended a recent premiere and some snapshots from her appearance on "The Rosie O'Donnell Show".

And if you don't think she's the doctor with the best hair on TV, who is (and remember Julianna Marguiles portrays a nurse)?

Snippets

You know, I've seen a few "Ally McBeal" episodes since I reported that VONDA SHEPARD cut her hair, and I've yet to see the new 'do show up.  I'm not retracting that she did it yet, just getting a bit uncomfortable.  But, hey, that's the risk I run when I have to report purely by pictures that I stumble across.  By the way, check out Fleamail to see a MUCH better explanation of why it looked better longer than I gave last month  v  And for those of you keeping track at home, JUDITH LIGHT is planning to go on the road with her play "W;t" (Wit).  This definitely means that Judith will continue to be smooth of noggin until around June of next year.  As for the off-Broadway production, British actress LISA HARROW (shown at right) assumes the role in on January 4, 2000.  Best of luck to Lisa, and here's hoping that she gets to keep her locks through the holidays...though it would probably save her a lot of time in trying to find the perfect updo for New Year's Eve.

Looks like HILARY SWANK is letting her hair grow since she sheared most all of it off to portray Brandon Teena in "Boys Don't Cry" as I reported last month.  Obviously, it's in that weird transition stage, though she could do SOMETHING with it, for Pete's sake.  Most likely, she's just trying to get as much length as soon as possible, especially since her costar, Chloe Sevigny, who played her (his? whatever) girlfriend, Lana, in the flick said that she since filming the movie has trouble thinking of Hilary as a woman.  There's a boost to the ol' self-esteem, huh?v Looks like CHRISTINA RICCI has gotten on the extension train by adding about a foot of brunette locks to her previously layered, chin-grazing style.  Though the additional length certainly helps, the stick straight dark hair just makes her appear a little too Wednesday Addams.  She needs some additional volume, color, or something to break up the harshness of the look.  It does, however, make you wonder how "Sleepy Hollow" could possibly be her first Tim Burton movie.

Finally, a tidbit for you soap fans in the form of PRISCILLA GARITA of the soon-to-be-defunct "Sunset Beach".  I reported last year that she had shorn her long hair into a very short crop and had started growing it back almost immediately.  In fact, it's now actually back to her shoulders.  In an online chat with TVGuide Online back on August 10, she was asked if she'd ever cut it short again.  Priscilla's response:

"Never, I don't think. It was a very bold and difficult move for me. I can now say that I've tried it once in my life...(b)ut, for me personally, I prefer long hair. It's a security blanket for me."
Plus, it looks a helluva lot better.  Still doesn't explain why she did it in the first place, though.  Anybody know?
