While
Tori was getting her locks snipped, co-star JENNIE
GARTH was contining her trend from last year and letting
hers grow, as you can see from the picture to the left. I still greatly
approve of the additional length on Jennie, however, I don't get what's
she's going for with the color. I know she's naturally a dark blonde
and goes lighter through color or highlighting, but these too widely spaced
highlights just make for a streaky mess. Go back and let them finsh
the job, Jennie
v
Continuing on the new growth and blonde theme, "Jessie"'s
CHRISTINA
APPLEGATE had let her hair grow quite a bit since last
season. It now not only falls a good six inches below her shoulders,
it's all blonde, eliminating that weird, very dark, Lead-Singer-of-Berlin-Teri-Nunn-esque
underlayer she had last year. While all that is good, Christina needs
to do something other than just letting it hang there. At least last
year's shoulder-length flip had style to it
v
Speaking of Applegates (how often to you get to use that phrase?), "Later
Today"'s JODIE APPLEGATE
continues to break from the dual NBC morning show style standard of very
short or tucked by letting her thick, dark hair grow out into a longer,
fuller, and lightly layered style. Jodi has terrific hair is not
only able to wear this style well, but even looked good in the transition
stage. Alas, for things to remain in balance, someone apparently
had to make a sacrifice,
which is the only way I can explain why ANN
CURRY removed all the length from the back of her style.
Sure, her new shorter cut is attractive on her, but don't you think the
first picture (on the left) looks better than my incredibly accurate simulation
of the crop (on the right)?
Talk
show host LEEZA GIBBONS
has let her locks propagate (ain't thesaurus' great?) after several years
of wearing progressively shorter styles. It's now back to a long,
layered bob that falls just below her shoulders. Leeza has had styles
close to this before and this one is just as flattering on her. Uh,
meaning that I'm saying like the others it's rather fetching (yes, fetching)
and not that I'm secretly saying it also sucks
v
After shearing her locks from shoulder-length to very short on "The
Practice" (in such a major change that the drasticness of it was
referred to frequently in the show's plot), LISA
GAY HAMILTON has started to reclaim her lost locks.
Her previous head hugging cap of curls has blossomed about 4 inches or
so into a full, feminine, afro-like style. Assuming she's going to
continue the growth, she's carrying off the transition stage very well
v
In the months since HBO's "The Sopranos" (an
excellent show if you're not watching it) wrapped last season,
LORRAINE
BRACCO has let her short hairline-length bob with bangs
grow out to her shoulders in a full, no-bang style, reminiscent of the
style with which she began last season. I like the additional length
since it's more complimentary to her square jawline and the other style
just looked a bit to harsh on her. I mean, she's supposed to be the
therapist and not one of Tony's crew, capiche?
Finally, we get to a few things that I'm not sure
about or simply don't understand. The first questionable item concerns
ROMA
DOWNEY. Saw a clip on "ET"
about her debut album (yup, apparently she sings) and it looked as though
she had cut her formerly hip-length red locks back up to about mid-back,
an apparently loss of about a foot. Haven't been able to confirm
it since with any other sightings or pictures, though. Anyone have
any info on this?
v
The next piece of confusion comes courtesy of RENEE
ZELLWEGER. Though I never heard or read any direct
comment on it, I know she was sporting a short crop at this year's Oscars
(the pictures are just too plain). However, in every recent spotting
of Renee lately (e.g., the MTV Music Video Awards) she has a voluminous
mass of blonde locks falling well below her shoulders. Best guess
is that it's a wig/extensions she's wearing for the movies "Me,
Myself, and Irene" with Jim Carrey and "The
Bachelor" with Chris O'Donnell. If that's wrong, I'll let
ya know v
Now we get to the stuff I just don't understand, like when
KIRSTIE
ALLEY spun the big Wheel Of Haircolor and it came up
"Bleached Blonde With White Streaks and Dark Roots", she didn't cash in
her "Free Spin" and give it another whirl. I mean, just the law of
averages says she had to pass a mirror at some point, right? What
the heck was she thinking? v
And finally, the last person weighing on my mind is
BARBARA
HERSHEY, who has just joined the cast
of "Chicago Hope". I don't understand
why she doesn't think Bette Midler will be upset when she finds out that
Barbara rummaged through Bette's wardrobe after "Beaches"
wrapped and stole her wig. What's that you say? That was Bette's
real hair in the movie and this is Barbara's real hair now? Huh.
How about that. I wonder what are the odds are that both of them
at would have the same horribly unflattering, triangular shaped haystack
of red waves 11 years apart?

Scoop
First
bit of scoopage this month covers a frequent subject of this column,
LIV
TYLER. Apparently, Liv had just been waiting for
someone to ask her to change her hair for a role and after she cut it short
for Robert Altman for "Cookie's Fortune",
she was up for anything. Her latest folicular adventure is for the
independent film, "One Night at McCool's".
What did she do? Well...
"Her color looks just
like Nicole Kidman’s now," says color expert Matthew Boger, who treated
Tyler in a 4 ½ hour session in a quiet upstairs nook at Cristophe
in Beverly Hills. "It doesn’t look fake." He lifted Liv’s base color, then
added highlights. Liv’s hair is now shoulder-length and a blend of gold,
red and coppery brown. Boger, who made blond Lauren Holly into a carrot-top
in her "Picket Fences" era, sees Tyler every seven days to touch her up.
Ironically, Liv needs dark hair for a few movie scenes as well (so) she’ll
have to wear a wig.
Liv as a Kidman-esque redhead? I can't picture
it and, unfortunately, I couldn't find any photos to help. I'll have
to wait and see on this one, but I guess I should be happy that she didn't
do anything to the length. By the way, am I the only one that doesn't
understand why Liv can't find another role that would allow her to have
long, brunette hair? Sheesh. Oh, and thanks to the fine folks
at FashionDish
for the info.

FashionDish
also provides an update on the recently shorn BAI
LING. Looks like Bai was all THAT enamored with
the hairless look, despite her statements that the loss of her below hip-length
locks was a liberating experience...
Last
time we checked with starlet Bai Ling, she was putting a long wig over
the bald head she’d shaved for the upcoming “Anna and the King”. Now she’s
in the pretty, gamine stage of growing it out. At the recent San
Francisco Levi’s opening party, Bai wore a scarf, then took it off so we
could se the new do. By the way, her wig is made of her own, saved hair.
And you wondered why the wig looked so convincing.
Anyway, it will be interesting to see just how long Bai eventually lets
it get. And, if you are doing the math, assuming about 6 inches of
growth a year, Bai should be back to her original length around 2006.
Mark your calendars now.

Finally,
I have two, count 'em two, oddly related bits of scoop on
NEVE
CAMPBELL. The first popped up from an
interview
with "Entertainment Tonight". Neve is
portraying a hairdresser in a new movie and was asked if she had a hair
horror story she could relate...
When I was
13, I decided to go to Little Italy in Toronto and have my hair permed.
I ended up looking like Bozo the Clown. I had like really tight ringlets
and I sat crying for about four hours with my mom saying, "You look great!"
All the while she was taking pictures of me. It was horrifying!
Ah,
what woman out there can't appreciate the agony of the mid-80s perm disaster?
Oh, stop shaking your head, if it wasn't you, it was your sister or friend...and
you probably talked them into it. Anyway, what's interesting is that
Neve's real hair horror actually occurred several years later. According
to an
interview
with TV Guide (which pulled the tidbit from
Cosmopolitan)...
Party of
Five star Neve Campbell confesses that she is an alopecia survivor; she
battled the disease, which caused her hair to fall out in chunks, several
years ago.
"I was working far
too much and I wasn't getting enough sleep, so I started getting a bald
spot on the back of my head," the 26-year-old actress tells Cosmopolitan.
"An acupuncturist had to insert, like, 20 needles into my scalp to make
my hair grow back."
Glad to see Neve had only a mild case of the
disease, since in serious cases it can result in the loss of all body hair.
Keep that in mind the next time you think YOU are having a bad hair day.
