No news on Madonna this month, so it must be time to
report on SHERYL CROW again. Just when you didn't think it was possible, she's actually gone
shorter again. For Lilith Fair this summer, Sheryl has adopted the supershort
SARAH MCLAUGHLIN
style. The main difference between this style and the last one she had is all the length
on the top has now been cut off into the same choppy, piecey look as the rest, leaving
Sheryl with a true pixie with short bangs. Now that I've gotten used to her in short
hair, I can be a bit more objective and say that the extremely cropped look makes me
realize how much I preferred the more unkempt and softer previous version. In fact,
I'm trying my best to ignore the fact that the new cut now makes Sheryl bear a disturbing
resemblence to Miss Hathaway from "The Beverly Hillbillies".
v On an interesting Lilith Fair
side note, LEIGH NASH, the lead singer of Sixpence None The Richer (who had the hit "Kiss
Me"), and NATALIE MAINES, lead singer of the Dixie Chicks, also have the same style as Sarah
and Sheryl now.
Did Sarah force all the artists on the tour to go
through some Lilith boot camp that I just never heard about or what?
Speaking of singers,
ALANIS MORISSETTE has cut her hair.
Ok, ok, calm down. I had to do that just for the shock value. I guess I could
string this along a bit by saying that she sheared off several inches, but that would just
be pointless. Fact is, Alanis trimmed about 8-10 inches from the length which brings
it all the way back up to...drumroll please...her waist. Bet you wouldn't even have
noticed if I hadn't told you v I
found this picture of Bo Derek at the opening of "10"...er...wait a
second. Scratch that. This is actually
KRISTY SWANSON from the "Big Daddy" premiere. Honest mistake. For those of
you keeping a list of styles that never, ever work on anyone, make sure you add
"cornrows on a white girl".

Scoop
Thanks to faithful reader Dan, I have some additional scoopage on
what the deal was with BAI LING going GI Jane to portray princess Tup Tim in "Anna".
The following two
Bai Ling articles
are reproduced by courtesy of
The
Bai Ling Website. Special thanks to Nicolas Tang.
From a
March 2,
1999 article in the Malaysian English-language newspaper, The Star:
Chinese actress Bai Ling cried when she was told to
shave bald for her role as the princess Tup Tim in the movie Anna and the King.
The 29-year-old actress, who showed up at the
filming site at Armenian Street on Sunday with a short hair cut, said she was at first
reluctant to shave bald.
"I thought about it for a long time and cried,
but finally decided last week to sacrifice my hair for the sake of art," she
said.
Her hair, which used to reach to her back, was
cropped by a professional hairstylist last Friday.
She is expected to go completely bald by next
Wednesday or Thursday.
For her art? Like I said before, has this ever been a good
idea? Anyway, though resigned to the loss of her tresses, Bai still had a tough time
of it, as was evidenced in the follow up article on
March 5:
Chinese actress Bai Ling had a sleepless night on
Wednesday after having her head shaven bald for her role as Princess Tup Tim in Anna and
the King.
The 27-year-old actress said she could not bear to
look into the mirror as her hair was being shaved by a professional hairdresser.
"I cried as I felt my hair dropping down from
my head in patches," she said, adding that she could not sleep after that.
Although she feels more self-conscious now, she has
gotten used to her new image and is quite cheerful about it.
So there you go. A quasi-happy ending. She does appear
more comfortable with it now (e.g., look at the "Wild Wild West"
premiere in The Latest) and I've heard rumors that she actually likes it. I
guess all she has to do now is just wait for the offers to pour in looking for bald Asian
actresses.
Hey, it could happen.

Just
when I was about to give up hope on finding pictures of a blonde SIGOURNEY WEAVER, I stumbled across an "Entertainment Tonight"
interview
with her, complete with pictures. The reason it's here instead of in the Old News
section, is because Sigourney discusses the reasons for her new 'do in the course of the
interview, which is about her currently in-production film, "Galaxy
Quest". In it, she portrays one of the cast of an old "Star Trek"-like show, that gets abducted by very stupid aliens
to aid in fighting a war because the aliens think the cast is an actual, heroic starship
crew.
No, that's really what it's about.
So with that in mind...
ET: You mentioned the blonde, so is this part of the
character?
Sigourney: I chose this! I just felt that she'd been the
only girl on this show which ran I don't know how many years ago, and none of them had
been able to move on. I just thought that she really is a sunny California girl and so she
just fit neatly into the part. None of them have been able to move onto other
things.
ET: Do you like the blonde?
Sigourney: I like it, I've been blonde. I've worn it on
stage quite a few times.
ET: Do people give you a different look?
Sigourney: Yes! I think blonde's look much friendlier. It was time
to do the blonde.
ET: Are you going to leave it like that after the film, or
become a red head or something?
Sigourney: I haven't really thought about that!
I actually could see Sigourney as a redhead. In fact, after seeing how well the
blonde works on her, I would be hard pressed to come up with a color (or style for that
matter) that wouldn't be at least somewhat flattering.
Oh, and since the color was her choice, I don't think it technically violates her
declaration of not changing her hair for a movie that I reported on in my
second column.
At least that's my story and I'm sticking with it.
