JerkyFlea: June 1999
I think I'll start slow and build with the new stuff this month, so let's begin with SALMA HAYEK. As I reported a couple of columns ago, Salma has continued to go shorter and shorter. Since I last reported on her she has gone from her shoulder-length bob to a slightly below chin-length bob. And if she let it go curly rather than pulling it straight, it would easily bounce up above her chin. ![]()
Before
After FLEA'S CALL: As I said before, I prefer Salma's hair longer and, though straight looks fine on her and that's what's currently in style, I wish she'd use her natural curl more. As for the length, unless she goes layered or much shorter, this is about the limit for her one length bob. Since she has a square face and a very square jaw line, she really wants to avoid having it hit right at her chin. Otherwise, she'll end up with a horizontal line that cuts right at the top of her neck, which isn't a good thing. She should layer or round the bob or, better yet, start growing it back out. MADONNA has changed her hair again. I know this is almost a non-event anymore, but you have to admit that the frequency with which she is doing it lately is almost manic. I mean, have you seen her at more than two events with the same style/color this year? Anyway, the latest change is that she ditched the red color she had at the Oscars and has gone to a strawberry blonde color that fairly close to what she had when she first reemerged with the "Ray of Light" album. Cut is the same layered, between chin and shoulder bob she had before, just in a a more relaxed style. You can get a good look at it in the new video she has done for "Beautiful Stranger" for the "Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me" soundtrack.
FLEA'S CALL: As is usual with the woman who can wear virtually any style (and has), it looks good. I wasn't a big fan of the red and the new color is done extremely well, in that you can see various shades of blonde throughout. Very natural. I would like to see the length a bit longer, but this suits her well. But, as I've said before, what length or color hasn't worked on her at least partially? Next up is that Internet download queen, TERI HATCHER. After taking some time off after the birth of her daughter, Teri has taken the lead in the touring company of "Cabaret". That's right, she's singing and no, I don't know if she's any good. But I digress. Not only has Teri reappeared in a new role, but with a new hairstyle. It's a smooth, one length, chin-length bob, with chunky, blonde highlights. Think of her style in the first season or so of "Lois & Clark", but with blonde streaks. ![]() FLEA'S CALL: I never liked her style from the first season or so of "Lois & Clark". I like it much less with the blonde streaks. As I think the later seasons of the show proved, Teri looks much better with some layering and the fullness it provides, rather than the stick-straight, one length bob which doesn't do much for her. Length actually isn't all that important. She can go long or short (though I never liked that super short red crop she got one summer), but tends to look better with mid-length styles. As a matter of fact, some layers in her current length would give her some much needed volume. By the way, am I the only one who thinks she looks better with bangs? On to someone who has also been out of the spotlight for a little while, though she has had roles in several smaller movies; JEANNE TRIPPLEHORN. Jeanne is best know for playing opposite Tom Cruise in "The Firm" and Kevin Costner in that definition of big budget flops, "Waterworld", though you should catch her with Gwyneth Paltrow in "Sliding Doors" (good little movie that isn't quite what you think it is). Anyway, as you will see in her starring turn with Hugh Grant in this summer's "Mickey Blue Eyes" (geez, I'm starting to sound like her publicist here), she's cut her hair. Short. The moderately bad pictures below show that it's essentially a layered ear-length bob that's a bit rounded and tapered in the back. ![]()
Before
After Oh, and if you are wondering, that's Hugh that she's kissing. FLEA'S CALL: You're probably saying to yourself, "Hey, those pictures are taken outside in the wind and so it certainly must look better when styled." And you would be wrong. It doesn't even look that good in the previews for her new movie. Jeanne has a roundish face and very thick and naturally curly/wavy hair. When you have that combination, you want to avoid the roundish bob because it makes your face look REALLY round. She should either let it grow back below her chin or add some more layers and get it back off of her face a bit. Something to take down the volume on the sides. On a completely unrelated note, am I the only one that thinks, given that bone structure, that she looks like she could be related to Rene Russo? If you caught the MTV Movie awards, you probably not only noticed Jennifer Love Hewitt (who I discussed in Old News above), but also KATIE HOLMES of "Dawson's Creek". Looks like Katie has been to the stylist during her hiatus this summer. She has ditched the one length 'do in favor of a shoulder-length cut with some long layers, especially around the bottom and her face (think of a longer version of the Brooke Shields style shown in Old News and Sandra Bullock from last column). Not drastic, but definitely visible. FLEA'S CALL: The jury is still out on this one. Though Katie's chestnut mane was very pretty blunt cut at one length, I'm not sure how much it actually flattered her. This new cut is kinda flippy and funky, but I'm not sure if I like it. Probably could have been styled better than what I saw. Best bet will be to wait until later this summer when she starts doing interviews for her new movie "Teaching Mrs. Tingle" and get a better look at it then. On a side note, I realize that they changed the title of the movie from "Killing" to "Teaching" in respect for the Littleton tragedy, but doesn't the new title make it sound more like "Driving Miss Daisy" than a teen comedy/thriller? But, as usual, I digress. | |||||||||||
