Other causes of hair static may include, but not be limited to the following: 1. Use of hot or very hot water in showers which suck moisture from hair and skin. What Is Static Electricity? Static electricity is an imbalance of electric charges within/or upon the surface of a variety of materials. The charge remains present until it’s able to move away by means of an electric current or electrical discharge. This is in contrast with current electricity, which flows through wires or other conductors and transmits energy. A static electric charge is created whenever two surfaces contact or separate and at least one of the surfaces has a high resistance to electrical current, becoming an electrical insulator. Contact-induced charge separation may cause hair to stand up, causing static cling. A good example of static cling is when a balloon rubbed against hair becomes negatively charged. When near a wall, the charged balloon is attracted to positively charged particles in the wall at which point the balloon will cling to it, appearing to be suspended against gravity.
