Short Stuff

JENNIFER JASON LEIGH, best known as the blonde in "Fast Times At Ridgemont High", has just recently cut her hair into a very short crop and briefly returned to her natural brown color before going blonde again.  For anyone else, this would be major news, but for her it's par for the course.  I don't think Jennifer has looked the same in any two roles she's had, let alone any two times I've actually seen her.  The only reason I'm reporting on this particular change is that I had just seen her fairly recently and her hair was blonde and a couple of inches below her shoulders.  As I said though, if I hadn't told you this was a major change, you probably wouldn't have even noticed v  Saw some pictures of JENNIFER LOVE HEWITT taken during filming of her new "Party of Five" spinoff series, where she's out to find her birth parents in NY.  Looks like she has added some major blonde streaks to her brown locks.  Not talking highlights here, but big, chunky, Courtney-Cox-in-"Scream" blonde streaks.  Not a big fan of the look on her.

Posters for the new movie "The Thomas Crown Affair" show RENE RUSSO and costar Pierce Brosnan.  In the poster (and in the movie, so I've heard) Rene wears a just below chin-length bob.  Don't know if she actually cut her hair for the movie or not, but I would be surprised if she did.  She's worn her hair long for quite a while and has gone with a wig rather than cutting it for other roles.  I'll let you know if I hear anything else about and if you do, let me know and I'll pass the word. v  Caught MIA FARROW on ET the other night and it looks as though she has finally completed her gradual move toward short hair.  If you remember a year or so ago, she still had the long, wavy, below the shoulders style she had worn for the past several years.  She then cut it to a bob, but kept the same general style.  Now, she has drawn from her past and sports a very short crop.  The look is virtually identical to what her "Rosemary's Baby" pixie would look like if it grew out for a couple of months.  Her given reason for doing it?  The ever popular "got tired of long hair" response.  Unfortunately, it doesn't look quite as good on her this time.

Lead singer of The Cranberries, DOLORES O'RIORDAN, has grown her hair out since we last saw her, which was a couple of years ago before she had her baby and the band took some time off.  Best known for her pixie cut (be it either brunette or bleached blonde), she has once again let it grow to a layered, almost shoulder-length blonde style.  Looks very cute on her.  You will probably have a good chance to get a  look at it soon since the band is now promoting their brand new album, "Bury the Hatchet", and is making the talk show rounds.  I should have some pictures by next column v Just when I went to the trouble to compliment KATIE COURIC on her flip, she goes and cuts it off.  Unfortunately, it seems that was the only change to the cut and now it looks unbalanced; as if she said to cut off the flip and leave everything else the same.  Odd.

JENNIE GARTH continues to let her hair grow back out after having a short cut for several years.  It's back out to shoulder-length in an attractive long-layered cut.  Interestingly, I think Jennie looks best with either short hair (above the shoulders) or long (below the shoulders).  This transition stage just doesn't work as well for her.  It will be interesting to see if this was the style she was going toward or if she keeps growing it v  Several folks have emailed me about BROOKE SHIELDS cutting her hair, but I didn't think anything of it.  I had seen Brooke in a recent interview and the descriptions I was getting matched what I had seen then, which was straight and still a bit below the shoulders.  Well, I caught her on ET the other night and it and it turns out I was way off.  Brooke has chopped off about 8 inches or so and the style is virtually identical to Sandra Bullock's new cut (shown above), but about a couple of inches longer.  Needless to say, it doesn't look any better on Brooke than it does on Sandra.  Yet another truly unfortunate hair decision, but since she has been under a ridiculous amount of stress lately, I don't think it's all that fair to be overly critical of it.  See, I'm not completely heartless. J

Name That Celebrity!

Well the previous contest ended early as a result of the move and the winner has long been announced, but for those few of you who didn't catch it...

Mystery Celebrity: ALYSSA MILANO

If you are wondering, this unfortunate blonde 'do was the result of Alyssa's role in the Academy Award non-nominee, "Double Dragon".  Fortunately, this style was temporary.  Anyway, the winner guessed who it was correctly and she was…

Jessica Johnson!

Congratulations Jessica and thanks to everyone who entered and all the comments. Now, on to this month's celebrity.

vvv

As usual, I give you either a picture of a celebrity from early in their life or career with some completely different look or I disguise a current picture.  You then have to tell me who the celebrity in question is.  Simple enough?  Of course.

So, this time tell me who's the celebrity getting the early '80s Teen Beat makeover, pictured below?

Mystery Celebrity:

Here's where stuff changes.  THE FIRST PERSON to send me the correct answer gets a hearty virtual handshake and pat on the back...and their name in the next column.  And really, what more could you want?  Email your guess to [email protected] with the subject "JerkyFlea Contest".  Good Luck!

Did Ya Know?

Got a two-fer for you this time; both concerning DEMI MOORE.  As you know, when Demi made "GI Jane" she had to not only cut all of her hair off, but do it on camera.  What you probably didn't know was that she didn't do it all at once.

So that director Ridley Scott could make sure that he captured every possible camera angle of the cut (since they obviously couldn't do another take), she had to stop half way through.  Demi then had to sit around with just the top and sides of her head shaved for about an hour while they repositioned the cameras.  Once they were done, she shaved the back and finished the scene.

The second thing you probably didn't know is that this wasn't as traumatic to Demi as you may have thought.  Why?  Well, because she had actually had a virtual crewcut once before.  When she made "The Butcher's Wife" in 1991, she dyed her hair blonde [left] to go with the blonde fall she wore (because her hair was still short from "Ghost").  After the movie, however, the blonde had so damaged her hair, that rather than recoloring it and letting it grow, she just sheared it off into an ultra-short pixie cut [right].  It was from that point that she let it grow until she cut it all off for "GI Jane".

Which was just pretty darn depressing, for obvious reasons. J

As usual,
