Term: Mullet Hairstyle

One of the most beloved and hated hairstyles of all times. The mullet is a hairstyle that features "two haircuts for the price of one". A traditional mullet hairstyle has a very short front and sides with a long flap of hair hanging down to the top of the shoulders or longer.

To be authentic, a mullet must have fully exposed ears. The mullet was very popular in the 1970s and throughout the 1980s. Known by various nicknames, the mullet is often associated with wrestlers, hockey players and some rock muscians. At times, the mullet is referred to as "mud flaps" or "hockey hair".

In some circles credit for the creation of the Mullet was given to the Beastie Boys. There is a lot of debate over whether the Beastie Boys actually invented or just adopted the style. Historian point out that a form of the Mullet could be seen throughout various cultures. Movie buffs also point out that a version of the Mullet was seen in the classic move, Cool Hand Luke where the man was referred to as "mullet head".

The Mullet haircut and hairstyle has launched an entire subculture of websites on the Internet. There is also modified versions of the mullet including a gullet which is a female mullet wearer.

Daily Hair Tip
To combat cowlicks apply pomade or setting gel to the spot & blow dry w/ nozzle aimed downwards. Longer hair helps weigh down cowlicks as will tiny barrettes or clips. Pulling hair into a ponytail or braids will tighten down the cowlick. Experiment until you get results.
