Term: Abraded Hair

This is the term used to describe hair that is broken or suffers from excessive stretching and/or traction of the hair.

Abraded hair is most often found in hair that has been chemically permed, relaxed, or straightened.

Sometimes abraded hair may also occur with excessive hair bleaching or color treatment or when a combination of chemical treatments are combined such as chemical straightening with chemical bleach or color.

Preventive and repair treatments are available for dealing with abraded hair and as a minimum might include the use of various polymers or peptide treatments applied to the damaged hair.

Abraded Hair may also refer to random hairs that are inadvertently sucked into the intake areas of a blow dryer which are then automatically cut by the dryer's mechanisms to prevent hair from damaging the blow dryer's motor, fan blades, or any other working parts.

This feature that automatically abrades hair in a blow dryer falls under the United States Patent 4195218.
