Hair How To: Questions You Must Ask Before Getting Any Cut Or Color

Monday, April 4th, 2011

It’s common knowledge in the hair world is that the devil is in the details.  What does this mean?

Quite simply that before you spontaneously pop into your hairstylist’s chair and whimsically ask for a sizzling new hair cut and dramatic new color you need to ask the following questions:

1.  What will it take to maintain this cut and/or color?
2.  How often will I need to do root touch up?
3.  How often will I need to have the cut trimmed or reshaped?
4.  Will this haircut work with my face shape?
5.  Will the color complement my skin and eye tone?
6.  Does this haircut work for his hair type, texture and current condition?
7.  Does this haircut add or subtract age and/or pounds?
8.  How difficult will it be to duplicate the styling techniques at home?
9.  If I decide I don’t like it how hard would it be to return to my current hair color and/or style?
10.  How long will it take the hair cut to grow out and what styles can I transition to?
11.  Are there new products I will need to buy to maintain the color or create the new styles?
12.  What is the best features of the color and/or cut?
13.  What are the worst features of the new color and/or cut?
14.  If you were me, would you recommend this cut and or color or something else and why?

Healthy Hair Should Be The Beginning Of All Seasonal Hair Trends

Seasonal Hair Trends – Start With Healthy Hair

(NAPSA)—Whether you’re slicking your hair up or embracing your curls, this season’s trendiest looks start with healthy hair.

Itchy, flaky scalps are not confined to the colder months, and not caring for your scalp can cause hair to look less than lustrous.

Dandruff in summer can make this a yearlong problem.  Scalp sensitivities associated with dandruff can lead to increased scratching and touching of the scalp, which can damage delicate scalp skin and the hair cuticle, leaving hair dull and lifeless.

For healthier hair, celebrity stylist Ben Skervin suggests the following tips:

• Having a healthy scalp is especially important going into the warmer seasons like summer.  Use a conditioning shampoo with zinc pyrithione, like Head & Shoulders, to get your scalp ready.

• Start the season with your hair in its best condition by getting a haircut! Damaged hair with dead ends can leave you with unhealthy-looking hair.

• A great mini treatment for the beach is putting conditioner in your hair and leaving it in there.  Try Head & Shoulders Smooth & Silky conditioner. Your hair will absolutely feel soft to the touch.

Curly Hair Styling – Scrunching Curls With Diffuser For Abundant Tight Ringlets

Tuesday, March 8th, 2011

One of the goals of using a diffuser is to help form abundant tight ringlets, coils and curls.  One of the biggest problems with creating bouncy curls is that sometimes the hair at the roots will go flat.

I have discussed this challenge with curly hair gurus Robert Hallowell and Barbara Lhotan.  They both use a range of methods but recommend diffuser scrunching as a good option.

Follow the steps below to scrunch curls with a long finger diffuser:

One method to combat flat roots which can be the bane of well formed ringlets is to actually scrunch tresses with a long finger diffuser.

1.  Separate pre-cleansed, damp naturally curly, wavy or permed hair into individual sections.  Remember, the smaller the sections, the tighter the ringlets which will be form.

If you have a special routine that includes applying a special curl friendly styling cocktail to wet strands and towel plopping, be sure to follow your normal routine before using the long finger diffuser.  Make sure strands are not dripping wet.  The key is to separate curls into even sections and then work on one section at a time.

2.  Position the long finger diffuser so that it’s flush or adjacent with the scalp and scrunch up the target section of hair in the diffuser bowl.

3.  Turn the dryer on to a low heat setting.  If your hair takes a long time to dry you can even experiment with medium heat, but high heat is not advised as it may damage the scalp.

Some fans of this technique prefer to dry their strands on the cool or cool shot setting.  It’s also best to use a low or medium speed rather than a high speed since the goal is to avoid blowing the curls around with air from the dryer. (more…)
